My kid's DS has a broken hinge, and I'm thinking of replacing it for him for the holidays, but I don't want to spend the $ if Nintendo is coming out with something new soon to replace it. Anyone here more linked in than I am and know if the DS has a replacement coming soon?
Not sure if nintendo has a new handheld coming out. probably not though. But, sometimes nintendo will repair the hinges on DS's for free. It was sort of like a recall.

I understand Nintendo has or will be bringing out a new DS but it won't have a game boy slot like the older model.
Thanks - my son said he saw something about one that has a camera but not GBA slot... I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a completely new platform about to make his DS lite obsolete.
(he still wants a PSP in addition to his DS lite - ARGH!!!)
I don't know the details but apparently there is a new DS in Japan. My daughter has been talking about it for a while but I haven't paid attention. I think I remember her saying something along the lines of what Stingo said. She's not here right now but I'll ask her later.
Guess who just showed... Apparently the new one launched 2 days ago in Japan. It does not have a Game Boy slot. According to her they don't know when it'll be available in America but she heard April.
Nintendo has been very good at making most things backwards compatable for quite a while, and rarely is there stuff completely obsolete since they actually have each handheld platform for a while, even though they may have a few revs of it.
If you can't get it fixed and can't get a used one, a new one isn't gonna be a waste. I haven't seen anything that is "new" coming out, more than just another rev of the ds, and as it is it's playable for a looong time. (As in, there's nothing new on the horizon that will mean games will come out that one can't play on the current model.)
He might, but then you can tell him to save his own money and trade it in.
It wouldn't likely gain him much, and would lose him the GB slot if he has those games. What's the big deal of a camera now that it's impossible to get a phone without one?
So... I finally got time to call Nintendo from the links above, and they want $82.50 to repair the cracked hinge. No freakin' way - a new system is only a few dollars more than that! sigh... oh well - thanks for the help anyway!
Kind of an aside, but I always find it sad when I'm out and I'll see a mom shopping with two kids in two... and they look like zombies because they're glued to the screen of their DS or PSP. These kids completely lack awareness - mom usually has to literally drag them behind her. They stare at the screen, don't watch where they're going... barely blink.
I love video games, don't get me wrong. I just hate how these things, along with DVD players in mini-vans, have become a crutch for real parenting and a way to keep your kids occupied so you don't have to do anything.
And Bytsi, this is is NO WAY directed at you.
//end rant

LOL! Whew! Although I'm sure there have been moments where I let his eyes glaze over just to keep him from complaining while out running boring errands...
