Default Tropical Vacation Recommendations

Anyone have any good tropical vacation recommendations? We want warm, sunny and by the beach. Palm trees preferred, but need not be in the Caribbean. We're shooting for the March 2009 timeframe.

Places we've already been:
  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Cancun, Mexico
So those two are off the list. We're open to anything else though. Really want to go to Puerto Rico.

There is good reason why Thailand is one of the most popular places - great crowded city full of tourist opportunities, rural areas which are equally nice, beaches as good as anyplace. My preference with son was backpacking style - (no planning beyond first and last couple nights) - cheap and fun, but Thailand accommodates all price levels.

Come on Chris, you're just going down there to see your girlfriend in a bikini and fuck like rabbits!

If you go to Mexico, don't drink the water. I've done that before and had bad bad things come out me.

It's beautiful up here, but you're traveling at the wrong time. If you wait until July, it's perfect and sunlight all of the time.

I highly recommend Bermuda... absolutely gorgeous island. The beaches have pink sand from the coral and it doesn't get hot and burn your feet which is great! Also, St. Thomas/St Martin, Virgin Gorda, Grand Caymen. Jamaica was fun, but if you go there do a cruise or stay at a resort and don't leave the resort. If you do want to do Jamaica, climb Duns River Falls... it's a lot of fun!

We went to San Juan back in May- I have been there a few times and like it. (Pics are up on Facebook if you want) We're going to Sandals St. Lucia for our honeymoon and Dreams in the Dominican Republic in January with Casey's family as our Christmas present. I've heard LOTS of great things about costa rica and its prices etc. as well.

If you go to San Juan I highly recommend the Caribe Hilton - it has its own private beach, lots of restaurants and things to do, and is close to everything. I took a cab from the airport the 1st time I went, the second and third times I went I had a car. I really think that either way works it depends on how comfortable you are with weird streets and if you have a gps. We did the bacardi tour and it was pretty funny - the tour sucks but the free rum is GREAT! Also, if you go to downtown the visitor's center gives you free rum too! Senor frogs was cool to see, but DON'T eat there. Anyhow, I can go on and on about it. The other good thing is NO customs!

I would look into a cruise. You'll get to see a few different island locations, get free food, some entertainment (they'll have comedians or some type of show), and you get go several different excursions like snorkeling or zip lines. The best thing about a cruise is it's all taken care of for you. You don't have to take care of anything except showing up to port on the right day. Also many are very economical compared to paying for a hotel and then paying for food and entertainment.

Absolutely! Couldn't have said it better myself. And if you decide to go this route... my mother is a cruise planner and can get you a great deal. I'll PM you her work number if you're interested

Costa Rica. Awesome. Cheap.

Or the Pacific side of Mexico. That's beautiful too.

I would second a Jamaica trip. If you want some privacy and a nicer area go to one of the resorts in Negril. Ochos Rios will have more partying.

I'm going to Nosara, Costa Rica on Dec. 6th for a week to surf. It's a super laid back chill place in the jungle. Cheap tho and the beaches look nice. Only down side are all of the 'suggested' vaccinations (Hep A/B, Typhoid and malaria lol).

Just thought I would bump this thread. Only 22 more days till I can surf this.

BTW, all of the vaccination shots sucked. They said I might feel a little sick, so now I have a slight head cold. Guess it's better than really catching one of the diseases lol.

Though Thailand and many other "exotic" destinations are great, I would recommend something more local, WHY sit 12 hours on a plane and be fried for the first two days of your holiday??? Too bad you are not Canadian- CUBA, but any nice place with a beach works. Bermuda, Barbados, Jamaica

Cheers

I'm with on staying a little more this hemisphere for the reasons you noted. I've also heard great things about Cuba from my Canadian friends, so... yea, it is a shame!
