So, this popup keeps coming up on my computer, from windows. It keeps saying that i have a virus, blah blah, and is a red X in the toolbar in the bottom right corner.
Basically, it's just a popup that keeps coming up, and when i click to do a virus scan, you have to buy the virus scan from Windows in order to run it.
Anyone know what this is, and how to get rid of it? It's REALLY annoying as it pops up every 5 minutes.

That is, in fact, a virus. Make sure Spybot is fully updated. What antivirus ARE you running?
EDIT: You can Google "remove -insert program here-" for some detailed instructions on most any virus removal. I'd recommend against anything that requires you to download another program to remove it. Use any manual instructions provided.

Keep in mind: Ad-aware and Spybot are NOT anti-virus software. They are spyware removal tools. They will not remove a virus that has attached itself to the OS, boot sector, FAT32 or an executable. They also don't handle trojans and worms.
If you need anti-virus, get AVG, or if you can afford to spend money, get Kaspersky's.
My tools: Kaspersky's AV, spybot, spyware blaster. Then there is the router's firewall and windows built-in firewall. That does it all.
There is also my prevetative measures. I don't surf porn or pretty much do any indiscriminate surfing, nor do I download exes I don't know.
You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
Then:
Access System Restore through Help and Support.
Follow the instructions on your screen.
NOTES:
To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, and then click Help and Support. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click Run the System Restore Wizard.
While the computer is in safe mode, System Restore does not create any restore points. Therefore, you cannot undo a restoration that you performed when the computer was in safe mode.
You can use System Restore to restore your computer to any restore point while in safe mode. If you cannot start the computer in standard mode, you can use System Restore to restore to a time when you could start the computer without errors.
To restore to a time when your computer started without errors, select a restore point as close to the time you remember it last started without errors.
If System Restore is suspended because of insufficient disk space, you cannot enable it by making more disk space available while in safe mode. You must restart the computer in standard mode and make more disk space available.
As a last restort (last resort), do you have the OS disk to reinstall? Again, as a last resort. If you have stuff on there you need to save, I'll see what I can do to help ya. If I can't, I think I might know a place that can.

i think i still do. Problem is that my cd drive is fried and won't open so i've been using an external drive. do you think it will still work, or not?

Yeah, Cynic's pretty much gone through my checklist. FWIW, I've had the same "XP Antivirus" bug myself and was able to get rid of it manually, but it involves going into your system folders and registry and deleting individual items. No problem if I was holding your laptop, slightly harder from afar.
You could go into your BIOS and set your boot device to the external device (connect and power up before you boot). It might see the drive then. Long shot, though.

That (the missing dll) is part of explorer. He can do a repair install, it should fix that issue but may not remove the original infection.
That involves putting the CD in a drive from which autoplay can run. Try it in the external, but depending on the age of your laptop, you might want to look into a replacement internal CD drive.
looks like i'll probably be looking at an internal cd drive then, because there's no way i can even get to that start menu in your directions, so no system restore. plus, i just tried it w/ the external, and no go.
How much do you guys think it'll cost to replace the drive for a dell 1100 inspiron? The part is pretty cheap online, but not sure how much labor would be... I'm thinking which will be better, a new laptop, or a new drive.

I'll assume it's not under warranty, else you wouldn't even ask such a question. I have an 8100 (also an 8200 when my 8100 started failing) that I upgraded my HD, video card and screen bezel myself. I also did replace the internal CD reader with a CD RW that was a cheap, defective knockoff (kept causing my system to crash after a period of time) and then put it back. Now, ours aren't the same, but laptops, especially the peripherals, are easy to work with. They are still quite modular by design. It's just that the design it different, but still plug and play.
If you have the dell service tag number, you should be able to find docs on how to replace/upgrade parts.
Once you find the docs, just make sure you get a genuine dell part, not a knockoff, like my CD RW.

i've heard dells are harder to work with than other laptops?
where is the service tag #?
nope, not under warranty anymore. I got it when i graduated high school 6 years ago.

If your drive is similar in design, it'll be a cake walk.
I recommend you get a genuine dell device. I say this because I got burned on a CD RW knockoff advertised as a dell device on ebay that caused my laptop to slowly die over a period of a few hours and reboot.
If you don't need RW capability, just get a reader. After I ditched the knockoff, I bought an external CD RW drive and couldn't have been happier.
