I've got a costume party coming up in September (early planning indeed!!) that I need some help with. The theme this year is the 50's. I'm looking for something that my wife and I can dress as to set us apart from the crowd. There will of course be lots of Elvis/fonzie/james dean and Happy days/Grease costumes. So I don't know any of that would work for me, unless extremely well done. But it can't be too obscure, people won't like it if they don't recognize it.
Best costume wins a prize. In the past, the prize has been a 4 day cruise, a 40" plasma, and last year, a surround sound system. So I totally need to win this (I'm hoping the prize is a ferrari this year!).
Last year the theme was Mexican Attire. The wife and I went as salsa dancers and lost to a homemade burrito costume. To be fair, the burrito costume was impressive.
I hadn't thought of the Wizard of Oz yet. I wonder if that one will occur to other people.
I like the Hefner idea. I'll have to run it past the mrs. though, she might not go for the bunny idea.
MASH is a good idea too. Do you think it would be readily apparent? I'm hoping people will be able to tell what we are straight off without having to ask.
hate to say it, but wizard of oz was in a different decade. It was released in 1939.
here are a few suggestions:
Marlon Brando in "The Wild One." About a motorcycle gang. I think it was the black rebel motorcycle club. You could possibly make a jacket like this and the greased hair?
Buddy Holly/Elvis/Cash (i'll bet you see a lot of Buddy Holly and James Dean guys)
You could go as Ed Wood? That's pretty obscure though...
As far as Disney, maybe Cinderella, Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland theme? Alice could be a cool theme. That's a pretty fucked up movie, so you could dress up as a white rabbit, and she could dress as Alice? That would be different than the typical playboy bunny thing. Or the mad hatter, or the dudes that were the playing cards (with a can of paint?)
Peanuts debuted in the 50s? Maybe as charley brown w/ a snoopy dog?
Also barbies i believe were invented, and Lord of the Rings and Narnia were written...
just an idea. the alice and wonderland thing would probably be sweet.

Army uniform with last name on it, worn by a blonde. And for you, just get a pretty dress, don't shave your legs, and call yourself Klinger.
Gah, I'm getting kind of worried. The coworker that won last year claims she already has the winning idea for this year. The pressure is on now.
I think my favorite idea so far is Mr. Potato Head, he was invented in the 50's. It would require lots of construction, I think I could do it though. I'm just worried that I'd spend the entire night explaining to people. I didn't know it was invented in the 50's until I researched for ideas.
