Sounds great! I didn't particularly love Pan's Labyrinth, but I can definitely see that sort of tone/style translating well to the Hobbit. I heard it's going to be a 2-parter.
Yeah. Very much surprised that Jackson is not directing. It's great to see that they will have McKellan reprise his role.
FWIW,
I read that Howard Shore, who wrote all the music for LOTR has takent the major themes and written a "Lord of the Rings" Symphony. I'll be looking for that one.

this is awesome news. i am a fan of his work and i am confident that he will be able to render the story well. i am excited. and it will be in two parts so that means they won't have to cut out the story. i just hope smaug doesnt look cheesy.
also guillermo del toro is directing "at the mountains of madness" for any of you lovecraft fans out there. that should be cool too.

I wanted to see Pan's, but couldn't get my gf to watch something "that nerdy" with me. I'm going to have to pick it up on my own time. That new movie coming out from Disney looks awesome, too. The one with the book and the hidden world you can only see through that looking glass. Anyone else know what i'm talking about?
EDIT:
The movie I was thinking of it the Spiderwick Chronicles
pan's labyrinth isn't nerdy. its a little artsy but i wouldn't say nerdy.
spiderwick i could see her point. but as a nerd i would like to say that movie was cool. i like that kind of stuff and thought that movie pulled it off well. its funny on top of being a cool story.
any dark tower fans out there? this is old news but i just found out the other day stephen king sold the rights to have it made into a series of movies. jj abrams (writer for the show 'lost') bought the rights for $19. i am so worried they will screw it up.

Jackson is tied up with previous obligations (the movie "Tintin"). He is going to be one the main producers of the movie and will help with the final editing of the movie.
EDIT: I should have added, original New Line Cinema was not going to allow Peter Jackson to direct "the Hobbit", but fans of the LOTR movie went ape-$h*t and really start to protest. Universal, who owes New Line, stated that the only way "The Hobbit" was going to be made was if Peter Jackson was allowed to direct it. But before Universal made that decision, Jackson signed to direct "Tintin". So to pacify everyone, he was given a "advisory" producors role. Most of this can be found on the TheOneRing.net

Yes, that's getting lots of play in concerts right now.
There is also a Lord of the Rings Symphony for wind ensemble written in the 1980s (I think) by the Dutch composer Johan de Meij. There are several recordings out there and I highly recommend it.

Good call. I have the Meij piece. It is well worth a listen.

My wife and I watched it at home. After 30 years not really seeing movies we signed up for Netflix, and I have made a point of seeing all the best examples of genres (sp?) I normally don't watch. We thought this was pretty good, probably should watch it a second time.
aside: there is a lot of conventions in movies, and first time (or first in a long time) viewers miss them. I'm always asking 'wot's happening?'

Pan's Labyrinth was one of the most graphic movies I have ever seen. I absolutely loved it. Great story (tragic), excellent cinematography, great cast. Yes, it was artsy, but not slow and melodramatic. It will haunt you for some time after you watch it.

The first part is to be "The Hobbit". The second part will be an original story (although they will be using some unpublished Tolkein manuscripts as the basis) that will try to bridge the gap between The Hobbit and LOTR. There is a sixty year gap between the two that they plan to fill in.
