Even though Hilton doesn't really matter, she does tend to underscore a decline in society. In this particular case, that a "best friend" can be so casually gained and in her case, made into a business transaction.
LOS ANGELES - More than 85,000 people want to be Paris Hilton's best friend.
The 27-year-old is using the Internet to cast potential friends for her new reality show, "Paris Hilton's My New BFF." The MTV series, which begins production next month, will follow 20 contestants as they live together and vie for the chance to be Hilton's permanent plus-one.
Obviously, it's marketing ploy, but still, it's inserting an idea, a possibility that one can find a best friend through business channels or with such a short cycle. I'm apt to believe a best friend is someone who proves trustworthy over an extended period of consistent interaction. Such bonds are usually formed over months, though it's not unreasonable for two people to develop such trust and kinship in a few weeks.
I think if it's the right time, and neither person has a lot of other connections pulling them away, then a BFF-type relationship can happen extremely quickly and still have the kind of depth you're talking about.
I bet it's rare, but I'm confident that it's possible.

It's pathetic! You wouldn't technically want anyone who would apply anyway. By doing so they have shown what desperate little sycophants they really are in the first place.
I didn't know what Paris was up to, and now, regretfully, I do. I could go the rest of my life without knowing what that rich little porn star is doing.

You wouldn't want a pathetic sycophant, but Paris would! I'm sure the depth RL refers to could happen if the right person applies.
...I'm hesitant to elevate Paris to porn star status.
the fact you posted that on here is the exact reason why she is famous
Not really. My ex- was very much like that. She would know someone for all of two days and call this person her best friend. It really made me wonder if people truly know what is a best friend.
I was thinking of my ex-'s fallacy more than Hilton's when I posted.
