Is anyone watching Dr. Phil? (moved)
This is what I get for being home sick today. I NEVER watch Dr. Phil, but it caught my eye today because it was about weight and body image. The anorexic girl is so sad!!!

I know!! Me too! This is NOT what I should be watching while trying to get over the vomiting from hell I've went thru the last 3 days! I cannot imagine putting myself through what she is doing to herself. It's beyond my comprehension. It's amazing she's still alive.

I know...I just cannot imagine. She looks like she is just barely clinging to life...I really hope Dr. Phil sends her somewhere she can get help.

I just looked it up - for anyone who wants a link, it's here:
Dr. Phil.com - Shows - Deadly Thin
I didn't see the show, but I was talking to a friend of mine today. A guy in his mid-twenties in the mid-200s, as far as weight is concerned, and he was telling me about this diet he's been doing for four weeks. It's really restrictive and he's already lost 23 pounds. But when he was telling me what he's "allowed" to eat, I plugged it into FitDay, and he's barely clearing 1000 calories.
It made me feel sick. He's voluntarily doing to his body what anorexics do. He's withholding nutrients and energy from his body for the sake of vanity.
The first thing I thought of was anorexics. The second was Holocaust victims. Check this out:
"...using the Warsaw Ghetto as a primary example, Jews suffered greatly next to their gentile counterparts, alloted on the average, 650-800 calories a day..."
It's screwed up the way some people view food. I'm glad I didn't see this show, I think it would've been too upsetting...

I don't think vanity is necessarily a bad thing to motivate someone to lose weight or change themselves. I think if all of us are honest, there are some vanity reasons or goals for most of us.
Unfortunately, anorixics/bulimics go way further than the 'way they view food'. They have a mental illness that really has nothing to do with food. It's the CONTROL of the food, not the food itself.

But where does that mental illness come from? Everyone starts at the same point, cutting a few calories. Just as alcoholics all started with a few drinks. Drug addicts start with a few pills.
What's really devastating to me is that otherwise non-mentally ill people would treat their bodies so poorly, for weight loss or any other reason. For me, in my situation, I feel like I can only watch my friend crash and burn on this diet. I've told him about weight lifting, clean eating...He knows I think his diet is crazy. What else can I do but wait for the fall out?

In this girls case, it was molestation as a child, which led to cutting as a control mechanism, then led to food as a control mechanism.
I can remember doing the 'grapefruit diet', the 'cabbage soup diet', etc, etc. I'm sure many others can attest to wacky diets in their past. Did they work? Maybe in the short term, but I had to learn my lessons! In most all cases, trying a wacky diet doesn't lead to anything as devasting as anorexia/bulimia.

Did you guys see those two journalists from the UK that went on the crash diets and journaled what happened to them? They ended up with eating disorders.

As the song says, "...we'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat..."
(I can't believe I just read AND replied to a "Dr. Phil" thread.)

I've seen anorexics long before Dr. Phil became a household name. It's disturbing to say the least. Blame popular culture and all those f***tards in the fashion industry for creating the image of the sexy waif.
I know Karen Carpenter died from anorexia.
