a 2 in front of the CO2, a 2 in front of the H20, and a 3 in front of the O2
that gives you 2 carbons on each side, four hydrogens and six oxygen atoms.

That's assuming that the a is supposed to be an arrow, and not some new symbol that I haven't been taught.

Oh - combustion - gotta love it.
not the answer - but a how to get there:
take the leftside, assume 1 for the first term (since it is the most complex and has biggest subscripts), add coefficients to the rightside to balance the C, then the H - and then go back and balance the O on the left side.
at least that's how I'd do it today. if that isn't enough of a hint, let me know
Editing to say that I am fairly positive on all the rest of the exam....this is the only one I am hedging on because I just don't "get" these equations like I should. BUT, even if I miss this one question, I'm pretty certain on all the others!
matthew left out (because it was implied) that the 1st term would get a one. better?
if push comes to shove and it is multiple choice and takehome/homework - you can try each choice, do the math and prove it right or wrong.
Do you know how to do the math? Coefficent times subscript for each Element - and sum them up per side, per element and see if it "balances" ?
so:
left: 1 C2H4 + 3O2 = 1 X C2 = 2 C ; 1 X H4 = 4 H ; 3 X O2 = 6 O
right: 2 CO2 + 2H2O = 2 X C = 2C ; 2 X O2 = 4O ; 2 X H2= 4H ; 2 X O = 2 O
totals
Left.: 2C, 4H, 6O
Right: 2C, 4H, 6O (4O+2O)
so it balances.
now do you see?
I think that's basically what I did, Lisa, even though I don't entirely get it. I had eliminated choices A,C,D because mathematically, it appeared impossible. And choice B seemed to work out (though not sure HOW I figured that!). So, I had put B next to that question with a question mark and I kept going back to it and second guessing myself. So...good to know I got it right to begin with!
Thanks for the math explanation. I'm going to study that and see if the way YOU explain it helps me better than my absent-minded prof!
Thanks for taking the time to find all of those links for me.....what a gem you are! I'll credit you for saving my 4.0 GPA when I get an A in this class!
when I took GChem, OChem & Physics, the internet was definitely my friend, providing cartoons, tutorials and little quizzes whenever I needed them. And I think there is more out there now then a few years ago.
Wow I am so happy I got a 5 on my AP chem exam and never have to see this stuff again.
Although if you're having trouble with balancing equations, just know that it gets much worse.

Jane,
I have a MS in chemistry, and teach general chem at a local college for 3 years now. Can I be of help?

I only need to get this class out of the way and then that's all the science I need, thankfully!
Rem, I may need some help with the next exam....we'll see!! I'll be sure to come back here for help from all of you geniuses! And, how great for me to have a Chem teacher right here on this board!

That's awesome!
I love psych. I always say that when I'm working full time, if I'm going to go back to school it will be to take psych.
Good luck!

Wow, painful flashback to 1982 ochem class. I got a perfect 40% on every exam, including the final.
