I click delete, it says "cannot delete, it is being used by another person or program".
I closed every program that could possibly be using it.
I checked my network connections, no one else is on my computer.
I still can't delete the damn song.
It didn't play, which is why I wanted to delete it in the first place.
I'd like to do this without doing a system restore, because I had to download a program and a few files this morning for school and my last checkpoint was created last night. I don't want to lose everything from this morning.
Anyone have any ideas?

I can't right click+delete
I can't drag it into the recycling bin
I can't rename it
I can't play it

Try booting in safe mode and deleting it from the command prompt. Move it to the root of c: first, it will be easier to navigate to from a prompt.

I'm doing a scan now, nothing is coming up so far.
My files are saved to my desktop, I don't know how to get to them from the command prompt.

Close the program you downloaded the song on (make sure its shut down and not running) and then go to "my computer" into the folder where the songs are and then try and delete it that way.
that's why it would be easier to move the file to c:\ first, using explorer, but you might not be able to. If you can't cd to the desktop folder in safe mode, try enclosing them in quotes, cd "c:\documents and settings\matthew\desktop".

Ok, I just tried to right click+delete again, and it worked.
I have no idea what happened. haha
Thanks both of you for your help anyway, I appreciate it a lot.

Mark - thanks for letting me know how to do that. If this happens again, I'll be able to try it.

Often, I have to reboot to delete because something leaves a thread with a lock on the file.
Another possibility is if you have a massive, and I mean massive amount of files (on the oder of tens of thousands or more) and the OS is going through a long process of indexing them.
Often, I have to reboot to delete because something leaves a thread with a lock on the file.
There's a handy tool that Microsoft provides (used to be SysInternals) that will let you kill the lock on a particular handle. Just go to the Find -> Find Handle or DLL and type in the folder or file name, then in the bottom you can right-click to close the handle.
Sony put out a anti-piracy sub-program called SecureROM, that as a part of its function prevents the running of process explorer and many game publishers are using this. One of the truly insidious aspects of this AP program is that it doesn't come off your computer if you uninstall the game that originally installed it. You have to go through a major multi-step process to remove it.

Rootkits are wrong on so many levels, which is I guess why I see a lot of anti-DRM/SecureROM/Starforce threads all the time in places.
