I'm looking to buy some plane tickets to boston, MA. I'm looking to depart probably on the 8th from chicago, and leave boston no later than the 15th.
The best prices i've found so far was 233 round trip, taxes included on delta. They only give a 46min layover time between flights though. Doesn't that seem like it would be cutting it close, or not?
anyone know of any good places to buy from, or which to avoid?

is the 233 with or without tax, cause from the site I linked a roundtrip on those exact dates would be 207 before tax, 265 after tax. not sure why the tax is so high though.

Would you have to go through the long line of security all over again? If not, 46 minutes is fine.
I've just tried all the travelocity, priceline, etc sites... and then the actual airlines. Whatever is cheapest is what I use... though I'm not fond of delta, and I'm beginning to hate american airlines. Sometimes the airlines have better prices, sometimes the discount places do. I don't know if it's possible to know which is at any given moment, but i have noticed they're all within a few bucks of each other, usually.

it's 233 taxes included.
it's like 40+ bucks in taxes?

usually you dont need to go through security on a layover... unless you're switching terminals or airlines or something at a really big airport... it's all just right there, you get off one gate and move to the other...
I tend to go for longer layovers (even 2hrs!!)...flights almost never run on time, and it's better to have some slack built into your schedule if you actually want to meet your connection. 20min delay makes 46 min layover really short.
i've used travelocity. usually get some good deals.
46 min layover. its not terrible. if the plane is on time, you'll be able to make it. still a little rushed, but not all that bad. hopefully you wont' have to go from terminal A to like terminal F for the transfer. i had to do that the last time i flew, but had more time for layover.
you dont' have to go through security again

I usually check Orbitz, Hotwire, maybe another, and then Southwest. I'm a senior now, and usually SW has the best faires - and they pour those $4 a glass wine full

The cheapest place to buy the ticket is from the airline, in general, although sites like orbitz are good to compare airlines or even figure out which ones fly the route.
They wouldn't offer you the 46 minute layover if it wasn't reasonable. They will usually hold a flight if people are transferring from a delayed flight (this is why pretty much all flights are delayed by the end of the day).
If you are worried about making your connection ask a flight attendant near the end of the flight (around when they ask you to turn of portable electronic devices, don't wait much longer than that). They can let you know how far away the gates are, if the connecting flight is on time etc. But again, I'll stress that you will very probably not miss your connecting flight, it doesn't happen very often.
As for hotels, if this is a weekend stay I would book a room at a hotel with a reasonable cancellation policy and then join the rewards programs for the hotel chains (hilton, marriot, starwood etc, all are free to join) and then you will get emails from all of them on Monday with deals for the following weekend. You are much less likely to get a discount during the week (especially in a big city) so if it is a weekday stay just find a good rate, book it and forget it.
Sidestep.com searches all the sites for you and compiles the results in one list, and you can specify # of layovers, etc. Best air fare site on the web.
After you find a cheap flight, go directly to the airline's site and buy it there.
