Default GPS Devices

Anyone know anything about these? Looking to get one for the family car this Christmas, but I have no idea what to look for in one. We found 2 on sale a Mio C220 C220 - Car Navigation - Mio Technology USA

and a TomTom One 3rd Edition

TomTom, portable GPS car navigation systems - TomTom ONE 3rd Edition

Both are on sale for $149. Which of the two is better? Any other suggestions around that price?

I just got a Garmin StreetPilot c330 and love it. I got it as a gift from my dad, so I don't know what it costs. It is freaking awesome though.

I can't say which is better from what I have heard and read, Garmin is one of the best followed closely by TomTom.

Or you could get OnStar and just pester the hell out of the operators and ask for Turn-by-Turn directions every time you go somewhere.

Ask yourself if you'll really use it.

I have several thousand dollars of gps stuff and never use any of it. I suppose since i work in this kind of feild, i may have a different view.

We need one for geo-caching. If you want to get into that, get one you can carry around, not mounted in the car for instance.

Frank- We'd use it, we go on road trips quite frequently and this will (hopefully) replace the conventional map.

Erika- Not sure if we'd be geo caching or not, but both of these models are hand held

we have both the garmin street pilot (and love it) and the garmin nuvi (and love IT too). the street pilot is bigger, and not as easy to drag around, whereas the Nuvi is handheld, so if you're in a walking city (we used ours in venice as you can't drive there), you can hold it and figure out where in the world you are - plus the battery lasts for about 3-4 hours without charging (the kid at best buy tried to tell me 45 minutes and i sat there going HUH?! do YOU have one?? which he didn't). The difference between the 2 nuvi's is that the newer (and more expensive) one will tell you "in 1.5 miles turn left onto columbus avenue" whereas the other one will have it on the screen and will only tell you "in 1.5 miles turn left" -- honestly, i have the lower version and it's not an issue to glance down and see "clumbus avenue" on it. My Dad uses the street pilot on his harley (he's got a little stand built in) and it also pipes through his speakers to play XM as it's a satellite receiver. We even used the street pilot in italy (it was so funny listening to it say the names), to help us find wineries and it worked wonderfully! Good luck!
