While I have the last generation of video game hardware, I was thinking of jumping into the current generation as I'd prefer to play some games on my big screen tv from the comfort of my couch. The candidates of course are the Wii, PS3 and Xbox360. Which would you go for and why?

PS3 - it has the most powerful hardware and the most potential, it has a blu-ray player, built in wifi, comes with a harddrive which is replaceable with any 2.5" SATA laptop harddrive, HDMI output, PSN is free, reliable (my PS3 has been on 24/7 since I got it in late July running Folding@Home when I am not playing games), bluetooth support, a lot cheaper then it used to be (note: if you buy the 40GB version it doesn't have PS2 Backwards compatibiltiy, if you want BC you have to get the 80gb for $100 more), gaming and Bu-Ray movies at 1080p is just jaw dropping amazing.
Oh, and yeah I have a PS3, if there is anything else you want to know about it let me know.

I'm mainly a PC gamer, with a strong interest in RPG and RTS (or Turn Based Strategy) games. Most of my gaming time is taken up with World of Warcraft, but I'd like to be able to do something offline, like I said, in the comfort of my living room rather than sitting at a desk.

I own all three systems and I play the ps3 the most. The only game i really play on the 360 is madden, and thats just because i like the controller layout better for sports games.
Halo 3 is crap, Call of Duty 4 is the best shooter game out there. PS3 is by the best, heavenly sword, uncharted drakes fortune, and ratchet and clank.
However Fable 2 is coming out for the 360, and I gotta say I'm excited.
The Wii is great and all, but I just don't play it anymore.
I have a Wii and love it. It's different from PC gaming (and 360/PS3, which are all very similar these days). I actually play it quite a bit, too. At least a few hours a week.
I've got a few great games that are great great fun:
Metroid Prime 3
Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros Treasure (so so awesome)
Excite Truck
Elebits
I've put a lot of time into each of these games, and I highly recommend all of them.
An RPG fan? XBOX 360 is the best in that respect thus far. All three systems have a drought of good RPGs so far (which is pretty sad considering how many good RPGs the Super Nintendo amassed its first two years) - the XBOX 360 has Blue Dragon, the PlayStation 3 has the upcoming Star Ocean 4, and the Wii has Tales of Symphonia 2: Knight of Rakastok (or whatever). Given that Tales of Symphonia 2 is allegedly a glorified dungeon crawler and Star Ocean isn't that great of a series, I'd say Blue Dragon would be your best bet.
I have not had a chance to try out the PS3 yet, but it is by far the most powerful system. It's worth the price for the blue ray player alone.
My friend jus got an xbox 360 and my first impressions of it were not positive at all. Halo 3 was good, but not great. The thing that bothered me the most was major slowdown on a crappy little mini game that is part of Virtua Tennis 3. 4 of us were playing and the framerate was just terrible at times.
The other major issue was that during gameplay my friends controller would randomly get stuck in one direction causing her to run to the back of the court for no reason. This was on a week old system with hardly any use.
Gears of war, which is supposed to be the greatest game on the system just felt slow and clunky to me. At this point I have no interest in the 360 at all.
The wii can be lots of fun, but I have not played it much.
We have a Wii. Is AWSUM but not oodles of "grown up" shit for it. Some, just... well, it's not the level the 360 has.
Just got a 360. Not playing any 360 games yet (busy w/ KotoR) but looking forward to many things.
Would LOVE to play Rachet & Clank, but if that's the only reason for a PS3 (and it is) why the hell give Sony my money... I used to totally be Sony's Bitch, then they abused the privilege and they can bite me.
I donno... The Wii is fun and I'd totally recommend it, but unless you're into more "good times" than "hard core" the wii still isn't the same as the other systems in that regard, Metroid or no. It is cheapest, however, it's games are cheapest, and it's really much fun, but you're not gonna find a lot of depth. Paper Mario was great for a RPGish game, and on the bright side it does play Gamecube games and allows you to download a shitton of old school stuff.
If you're looking for a solid selection of games to go with your new system, your best bet is a 360. Many games come out on multiple platforms, it's got more shit overall, and it's a decent price. Unless you really feel the need to have the shit the PS3 does, I wouldn't worry about bothering at the moment...
Besides... you'll end up with all three eventually, right?
Your true choice lies in the games available for each system, how much you're willing to spend (you prolly want to be sure your stuff will be compatable with the newer consoles, not a problem with wii), and what you can find (some places still have issues stocking the Wii).
I've heard that the 360 has lots of problems - lots of breakdowns and repairs. Anyone experienced that?
We got ours used with a used drive (they only sell used ones w/o a drive, you have to buy a drive because the drives get sent back to get wiped sincce they have sensitive info on them.)
ANyway, we've only played KotoR and Fable, and it's skippy, has some MAJOR loud hum, and other weird shit. We haven't figured out if it's the console or the connector or something else, but it's seriously causing a headache after a bit. So, I'd be careful... but I don't know how much better it is with a 360 game as we haven't tried one yet. The slow down and skipping during cut scenes is irritating, hope it's just because of the emulation.
PS3 guy here (60G version with near 100% backward compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games, systems I never had so I might go back to the best games of those consoles).
Love the Blu-Ray and the free online play.

My friend has been through 2 360's both had the 'ring of death'. The 360 runs a lot hotter than any other system. I have not had any problems with it yet. The only reason to really get a 360 is for the exclusives.
I have had a 360 since release. No problems whatsoever (premium).
As far as my recommendation...
For RPG and Rts, none of the systems is that good right now. If we are judging by the criteria of games currently available, then Xbox 360 is probably in the lead, seeing as how Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Mass Effect (Action RPG) are on it. But basically, unless you lean towards Japanese RPGs, the PC is your best bet.
If you plan to play sports games much or do much online play, the xbox 360 has by far the best online. If you are looking for something totally different than your PC that feels "console", the Wii is your choice. And if you want a Blu-Ray Drive and are willing to wait for next-gen games to come out that will look better than other consoles, get a PS3 (with the caveat that a mid-range computer built next year will play games that are better looking than on any console).
Personally, as a PC gamer, I wish I had a wii - the other consoles are too similar to my PC and there arent enough compelling games for me anymore - I mostly play RPGs and RTS, with the occasional racing game (Forza 2 on 360 is the best for that).

That's the line I've been waiting to read. I've played heavily on my PC(s) over the years and enjoy those the most (SimCity series, Myst series, American McGee's Alice, Starcraft, etc), so I know what I like and will continue to play there (yes, even BioShock). Plus, I saw Mario Galaxy the other day and loved it, and I'm hoping Zelda packs a punch (eventually) on the Wii. Plus, there's nothing like drunken bowling in your living room; a Wii would just make it safer

As it stands today 360 has the best performance and the best lineup.
The Wii is cool and all but I just don't see where it can go when the original novelty wears off. You play tennis\golf\what ever...what now? The selling point is the control. The system itself is pretty much where it's going to go, what else are you going to do with it?
I've got a PS3. It basically came with everything that's handy and you're going to buy eventually anyway for essentially the same price as what an equivalent 360 would cost. I've got a load of PS2 games so it's cool to still be able to play them. It easily has the most potential of any console on the market which is really what drove it for me. When they really figure the system out there's a butt load of power there to do "what ever you want to do".

It's all fun and games until some Wiitard throws the controller through the TV (or puts someone's eye out).

Yes on another forum I frequent RROD (red ring of death) seems to be an uncomfortably common occurrence. One might argue that the population plays their systems a lot more than the general population but it still seems like the incident rate is higher than I'd like.

Uncharted Drakes Fortune
Ratchet and Clank
Heavenly Sword
Lair
Folklore
Unreal Tournament 3
Coming in 08
FXIII/versus
Grand Turismo 5
God of War 3
Jak and Daxter
^ Just to name a couple in waiting for.
There are more ps3 exclusives coming out as well 08. As of now 360 has more games, but in 08 a lot better games are coming out for the ps3 (in my opinion). The ps3 will prove itself in 2008.
For the 360, the only game I'm really wanting to get is Fable 2, which in my opinion, can be a deal breaker for any RPG fan.
What about exclusives? Any compelling games in there to tip the balance?
-Gears of War (timed exclusive, it did come out on PC)
- Gears of War 2
- Halo 3 (Future halo games, for now)
- mass Effect
- Bioshock (except for PC)
- Forza 2
- Too Human
- Ninja Gaiden 2
- Dead of Alive 4
- Splinter Cell 5
- Condemmed
Not to mention that the PS3 Versions of games are still worse graphics wise, framerate, ect. And the PS3 versions tend to be delayed, i.e. Orange Box, Timeshift, Dirt, Straglehold, ect.
I will say this, XBox has a lot of great games right now, BUT what about coming next year. There line-up isn't as impressive. You also have to consider games that are coming.
Since I am a PS3 fan (note: not a fanboy, I still think the 360 is a good system with some nice exclusives) I would be remiss not to mention all of the PS3s exclusives both released and upcoming.
Overall I will say this, you can't go wrong with any system really. Between my friends and I we have all the systems and each has their merits. What you have to do is decide what functionality you need, what you want to pay for, and what system has not only the games you want to play now but in the future.

- UT3 is not an exclusive, it is coming to 360 in FEB/march
- Lair, and Heavenly Sword are crap, utter crap. I played both, Lair is a bitch to control and HS is about 5 hours long, 4 if you don't die much.

UT3 is a Timed exclusive so yes it will be coming to the 360. What the 360 version will not have is modding capabilities. With the PS3 and PC version people can mod the maps and download them to their systems.
As for Lair and Heavenly Sword I know several people who would disagree with you about them being utter crap. Lair is a good game and all it takes with the controls is smooth deliberate movement. Most people spaz out with the Sixaxis and get angry when they don't respond that way. Should they have given an analog control option? Ya probably, but they didn't. As for Heavenly Sword it is a beautiful game with a great story and gameplay. Ya it is a little short but so are a lot of other games but you don't hear people bitching about those ones. Also, if you play HS on the harder difficulty it takes much longer to beat.
Here is a gameplay vid of Lair showing the controls and how they work.
Of course, you have your opinions and are entitled to them.

Think about what you are saying here. I shouldn't have to replay the same section a dozen times to get my money's worth. To be honest I do not have the time or the patience to do that. I would rather enjoy the game, replaying the same 10 or 15 minutes and dieing over and over is not my idea of fun.
For the record I do play games on the harder difficulty settings, I do not mind if I die 2 or 3 times going through a section in a game.
