This comes to mind due to the time of season it is. It shouldn't just be this time of year but it leaps to mind now.
We support the Children's Miracle Network, especially after the problems we had with our first born.
Next, we support the Combat Hunger which takes place this time of year.
Those are our two favorites and yearly donations. In the past we've donated to the Police and Firefighters and to the Disabled American Veterans (my wife's dad was one).
I'd love to contribute more, but financial strains doesn't permit it right now. Maybe in the future as Monica gets back to work f/t etc.
Salvation Army is one I like, help a lot of homeless folks, and are always the first there when there is a disaster. I know United Way gets some knocks, but my understanding is that my contributions stay local, so I do the payroll deduction routine. And we donate clothing and coats every year to Goodwill, and canned and boxed food.

I've been involved in camps for underprivledged kids for many years now. Got a camp starting tomorrow. Have a great time. Can donate time but not money at this point. For those that can't give time please do give any money you can to charities.
It certainly would not feel like Christmas without the Sally Ann. We even have the Sally Ann here (don't know if you have that nickname for the Salvation Army) in Japan. I also support Unicef, and some international student support groups. I volunteer for some international associations that support students from developing nations in their studies in Japan.

Please donate to my Fifth Third checking account. It will be put to good use. Plus, a full 100% goes to helping. No adminstrative fees at all.

I like a local Food Pantry called the Hunger Task Force. From what I have read close to 100% of the donations go to feeding the homeless and underprivileged in the Milwaukee area.

For anyone who's read or heard about Three Cups of Tea, the Central Asia Institute might be something you'd be interested in. You can donate online, or simply buy the book through their website if you were going to read it anyway, to increase their Amazon commission for the sale.
If you haven't heard of the CAI, try starting with this article.

We always do toys for tots. We have a local 'Toy run' which is essentially one huge bike ride, with toys strapped to the bikes. I've been going since I was old enough to ride on the back of my dads bike, but now I'm riding beside him which is pretty cool.
I dont have that much extra to give, but a few times a year I like to give food to the food bank, I like this more then signing over some money personally because its pretty hard for the food not to goto someone who likely needs it I think.
My wife and I donate to several charities including United Way, St. Jude's, DARE, and our local church. It seems the older I get....the more charitable I am becoming...which is a good thing.
I like Red Cross. Not only do they appear not to have much of an agenda other than aid, they give prompt tax receipts in my email where I don't lose them!
I like the local charities - My big on is "Kids First of the Carolinas" they make sure that homeless and near homeless kids and their families are taken care of. I got to help out a while back when they gutted and made a house a home for a family who's house burned down. The christmas party that they have for these kids is so fulfilling.
We donate regularly to the local food bank in our area. We also know several people who participate in the Susan B Komen Breast Cancer 3-day walks, so they end up getting a fair amount of our money as well.
