Default 1K - You'll Never Walk Alone

I have decided to use my 1K post to thank all of those people who have supported me on this forum and to tell you about the what the song ‘You’ll never walk alone’ means to me.

The song itself in its original format is unspectacular; written by Rogers and Hammerstein for the 1945 Broadway musical 'Carousel'. Re-released by Liverpool band ‘Gerry and the Pacemakers’ in 1963 it was adopted by Liverpool Football Club. Fans on the famous ‘Kop Stand’ were bored many hours before Kick Off and began to sing various Beatles songs, but it was ‘You’ll Never walk’ that prompted the whole stand to sing spontaneously as one, holding up their scarves, gently rocking to the tune – a tradition was born.

Fast forward to the present day and the song is synonymous with Liverpool Football Club and is sung before every home game. It is a song that literally makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck even though I’ve heard it thousands of times. The message is one of persistence, of hope and determination and most of all of support.
The central theme of the song, for me, unifies people. Stood on ‘The Kop’ you may have doctors or lawyers stood next students or unemployed, however, when the song begins differences in class, race, region disappear.

The song is not intended to intimidate the other team, but to show our players that we as fans are here for them, we cannot score the winning goal or make a game turning save but we can cheer and shout and generally keep the players heads up.

This is where the link to JP Fitness comes, nobody here can lift the weight for us, nobody can make us wake up early to go to the gym. The role of the forumite is to support, encourage and guide not just in lifting but in life. I have seen some enormous feats of generosity on this board and have seen people offer comfort and support to those who need it.

Thank you to all, and especially to JP for having us as his guests both here in ‘virtual land’ and in person at the summit.

I dedicate the video found below to you, my forum friends;

The words are found below;
When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Cograts on the 1k.

I was introduced to You'll Never Walk Alone via Pink Floyd's Fearless (Interpolating You'll Never Walk Alone). I didn't know the story or meaning, though. Pretty cool.

Hey, it's nice to have you around.

Thanks for the kind words guys,

LD, the song as you may know has been covered 100's of times but this is by far the best and certainly the most poignant to the people of Liverpool -and I should add Glasgow whose team Celtic are also known for singing it

Neil,
What a distinct pleasure it was to meet you at the summit and spend some time with you. As far as the support on this forum, you give as good as you get. You are a very positive force and a good friend to all who know you. Congratulations on your 1k.

It's a lopsided relationship, to be sure.

You spent all that money and energy to come to the U.S. and attend the summit for three days.

We sent you the Miami Dolphins for one afternoon.

Congrats on 1000 Neil! You're a great source of encouragement for many (myself included). The song really is an embodiment to what this forum is for us who are active here -- we're not alone!

Next year we sing this song at the Waffle House. A combination of tradition. Thanks for everything Neil!

Great story, Neil. Congrats on the milestone post, and it's a privilege and honour to call you a friend.

(And Gabe -- great idea! The staff at the LR Waffle House will love it. Practise up your singing voices, everyone!)

Gabe, the staff at the WH will be even more perplexed than they were last time around.

Neil, it was a pleasure meeting you, talking with you, hiking with you and drinking a pint or two with you last April in LR. Congrats on your grand. It's great having you around these parts.
