What's everyone's opinion on what is the best mp3 player? I'm looking for one to take with me in the car on my drives to kokomo so i don't have to change cds all the time. So, i'd mainly play it in my car, i think.
Opinions/suggestions?

I guess it depends on your price range - we have a Zune (30G) and I just picked up a Creative Labs Zen Stone Plus (2G).
I like the Creative for outdoors (walking the dogs, running, hiking etc) because it gives good enough sound for the environment and if something happens to it it isn't a big monetary loss - it also charges fast and loads pretty quickly, and it's tiny. It sounds pretty decent in the car as well.
I have an iPod Nano, 2gb. Holds enough music to last me a while. In my personal vehicle I use a cassette adapter, in my work car I use an FM transmitter (since that car has a CD only and no cassette). Some car stereos accept line ins from MP3 players, which is handy.
When I bought mine I was either going to buy the biggest iPod they had or something easy to carry around. I selected the smaller one because it holds enough music for me to keep me happy for a while...right now I have 16 hours of music with 1.39gb used. I listen to a lot of audio books and a few podcasts. The larger ipod would have been handy but I really don't want to carry 80gb of music with me since I'd spend more time scrolling around than paying attention to my driving.
If you drive a lot XM is a good companion. I def get my money's worth out of that thing.
Or you can get the FM transmitter that will play your mp3 music through a channel on the radio. That's what the wife and I have.
Like Frank S. said, they're trendy, etc. but I LOVE my iPod. Wouldn't want to be without it. The new nanos have the video capability and are very small..... maybe too small to watch a video, etc. ???
The ease of use with iPod/iTunes is unbelievable. I've had a Sandisk and really hated it, but that's just me.
Just checked, in my 30 gig video I've got 578 songs (1.6 days) and 2.2 gigs used. Also have 4 movies (7.9 hours) and 3.37 gigs used. Still have 22.22 gigs available!
Another thing to consider if you're going to use it a lot in the car is to make sure you get a car charger. Obvious, but didn't want you to forget something simple.
I have a 2gb nano.. not enough space for me. Next time I want at least 20g so I can put lots of my music on it. I have the FM transmit, it works decent, but sound qual is only as good as the best FM signal, which isn't fantastic.. I have put some money into my car stereo and I notice the quality drop so I still use cds for the car.
it seems like if you were going to go with bigger sized nanos, like 8g, you would be better off just getting an original ipod for close to the same price, right?

hmmmm, 2 hours there, 2 hours back. plus, i'd have to keep changing the music every week.
iTunes is very easy to work with and let's you move songs in and out quickly. You can do it on the computer without the iPod connected and it will sync it when you do connect it. Plus you can create different playlists and load those in when you want to.
Like gymrat, I love my iPod.

is the transmit station different depending on where you live? Like if i'm driving a distance from city to city, am i going to have to change the station?

Yes. I use 89.1 here, which works well around town. If I head west there is a spot out in BFE that has a station on 89.1, so I have to change it. If I go east there is one spot near a church that conflicts, so I change it to 89.3. Last trip to Hatteras I put it on 89.1 and drove from Asheville to Avon and only had interference around Raleigh. I bumped it up a few numbers and it was fine.
I don't think any of them "hunt" for you.
Hard wired MP3 connection is the best, followed by cassette, followed by FM. If you're in the market for a new stereo some have mp3 jacks on the front, all you'd need is a male/male mini din cable to make it all work.
That's actually a really good question. I remember reading something on here about them.... shit, can't remember what was said..... I'm sure someone will help us out with an answer.
THe new iPods are realistically priced, and very nice. But you have to use iTunes, which is a pig most of the time, becuase they have altered the setup, so you cannot use other programs at the moment.
The new interface is fantastic, and the new Nano's are great.
A lot of the old iPod interfaces (FM transmitters, video stuff etc) do not work with the new generation iPods because htey have changed multiple things including the operating system.
I bought my son a refurbed 2gb Nano last year and it works great. I think it was about $100.
A guy here at work who commutes about 45 miles each way has an iRiver Clix and Rhapsody and he likes it a lot better than iTunes.

probably the biggest thing the ipod has going for it other than simply being reliable and functional is that if you ever want any accessories you have 500K to pick from at any store you go to. If you get a cheaper competitor you might find it difficult to get support for it after the purchase.

so i would be better off getting an old ipod for the time being, until new FM transmitters and stuff come out?

Go to an Apple or electronics store and play around with them. That's literally the best thing.
I never thought I'd want to get another iPod, I love my (now discontinued) 30g vid 'Pod; however, after playing around with a new iPod nano fatty, I tell ya - I want one.
Perfect size and the screen is sweet.
BTW, I don't even bother with my car stereo anymore, I listen to my 'Pod. I've set up numerous different types of playlists; subscribe to various podcasts; have two movies; numerous music videos; even several episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Aeon Flux on that 'Pod.
