Default Family Fitness

I asked this at MH and did not get much but thought some one here might have an idea.

I want to find a fun FAMILY fitness activity. But I am looking for more than hiking and biking. I am looking for an ORGANIZED event. Such as a family Yoga class, karate or similar. Do you have any ideas of what may be an option? My kids are 9 and 7.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Good question. I just found a local skate park and went and bought a cheap BMX bike, it isn't organized, but could be fun to do with the kids. UpNorth has done a few organized runs with his son Jack, who I think is 9. This is all I got for now, but I am thinking about it. I wonder if there are any family-fun adventure races.

This is the first thing that came to my mind, but doesn't involve the kids.

Our gym has rock climbing and the like, as well as swimming, so there's perhaps that kind of activity?

Thanks guys. And gals. Some good ideas. I guess I was hoping someone could say , oh yeah, many karate studios will do a family class. Or I hear they have yoga for familes. Yes, I am googling local businesses. The thing is who do all that other stuff. We go hiking, rock climbing, biking....we are very active. But for some reason I want something structured and planned for me. My wife and I do a class on Sunday evenings at our church which ends in us having a date. I am looking for something out and about with the kids that is structured.

Thaks for the ideas. Definately some thoughts I can run with.

Check with your local Parks and Rec dept. Most offer tkd classes or other activities that you can participate in as a family.

Family yoga/pilates/gymnastics.

If you were out in western NC there is also interbreeding, esp in Jackson/Swain counties.

For overall fun and challenge, yes. If I'm feeling sadistic, I'll play at Renaissance. Lost many a disc there.

Morning,

I'm a mom of 4 and we all do the following together:

Karate (my kids have surpassed me in nunchaku)
Walks (2.4 miles)
DDR (dance dance revolution)

So far, it seems to work out quite dandy.

Hope that helps,

Barbara

I know in my local area there are some community magazines that list upcomming events/activities, some examples are group walks, bike rides, horse riding etc. Check if you have any publications that have lists.

I know running isn't everyone's cup of tea but I've had a great time running with my kids (6 and 9). The time spent running is priceless one on one time: There are no distractions and all you can do with each other is talk. Problems at school, bragging about accomplishments and general "growing-up" questions have all been discussed at length.

And then there are the local 5k races. These are very family friendly and overwhelmingly positive events and don't cost all that much to enter. Plus the kids love the fact you get a t-shirt and all-you-can-eat junk (the race banquet) at the end of the race. In addition you have all of the adults who are congratulating them left and right, boosting their egos.

One more thing is that they get challenge themselves in a a measurable but non-competitive environment. It doesn't hurt that progress comes very fast for them as well. Running just once a week was plenty enough for them to see remarkable gains.

P.S. The other thing we do often with the kids is mountain biking, which has also been tons of fun.

I know you mentioned something other than biking, but for our family, biking TO the event has gotten us exercising together. Even something as simple as biking to the playground or the store instead of driving has gotten us doing something together other than the normal car ride.

I was looking on the internet in my area for this to get ideas for you -- city Parks & Recreation looked promising for the "family yoga" thing so you might try your local Parks & Rec classes.

Tried fishing? I went surf fishing a few months ago, my kid, who had planned to spend the day playing in the sand, wanted to try it. I had to bribe her to get the rod back. Yesterday we were hiking to our favorite spot and some folks were fishing nearby. We were talking when the woman asked my daughter if she'd like to fish. "Sure". Her 3rd cast she reeled in a sunfish. Today I had to drive over to Bass Pro in Charlotte (I'm in Shelby for a few days) to buy her a rod/reel combo. "Daddy, this weekend I want to go fishing again".

Beats the heck out of TV.

Oh yeah. We fish all the time. Bas Pro Shops is a family favorite activity on its own. Both my kids have their own rods. A couple of them actually.

Karate sounds fun as a family with kids although I think my kids are too young to do it without driving me nutters.

What about tennis? While walking the dog tonite I saw a family playing, each parent had 1 child, in a doubles game. The kids looked about the age of yours. It's organized, and they can be taught the rules as you go and it's something they could play forever.
Hope it helps.
