Default need some computer help.

my family is looking for a good dependable desktop computer. Looking to spend somewhere around 600 bucks, give or take. They're not too concerned as long as it's not ridiculous. They want a dependable, fast computer, with some decent sized memory 2GB ram, 320 minimum harddrive with a cd/dvd burner. Does anyone know any? They were looking at a dell, and while i have a dell and it's good, i think it's overpriced for what you get. Any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Check out http://www.dell.com/outlet. It has all of their returns and refurbished machines. You still get a warranty, main difference is you choose from an already configured machine. I don't think you can do much better than Dell.

TigerDirect.com is always running specials (one on a kick-ass machine for about $250 right now). For $600, you can get a screaming desktop. I'm personally a fan of Dell for their component universality (I like to tweak) and their customer support, but then, I like to build my own machines.

Agreed. Never been happier with a computer than the one I built myself.

for a non-computer savvy family, building your own is a bad idea - no warranty, no tech support.

You think dell is overpriced? they're some of the cheaper deals out there.

I think DELL is overpriced...what you're really paying for is the support. If you do end up going with DELL do a Google search for "Dell coupons" and they have special offers. For example, my backup computer is a DELL laptop, and I got $700 off the cost of it ($700 off a laptop of $1700+)... Best of luck.

Look at Costco or Sams (if you have a membership) - they have some good deals. For what you need, almost anything will do. Best Buy and Circuit City often have some deals and sales on HP desktops that meet your requirements.

Dell's are extremely dependable machines with great customer support. They aren't super performers for games and such, but if reliability and customer support is the most important aspect, I advise you to spend the money on a Dell.

I've owned two, a Dimension X800R desktop and a Inspiron 8100 laptop. The ex got the desktop and I kept the laptop. The laptop is still going strong 5 years later.

I think my most solid computer is the one I built myself, but for the most part I am happy with my Dell desktop and laptop (although on my Dell desktop I had to completely reinstall Windows once and had to do a repair install just last week).

http://www.techbargains.com/ is another great site that has coupon codes for Dell and other manufacturers.

If you are savvy enough to repair your own machine then build it yourself, newegg.com has good pricing on the parts you need.

If you don't have good computer skills and don't want to screw around with fixing everything yourself then a prebuilt - with a warranty - isn't a bad idea. All of the machines I get for work have a 4yr warranty, which isn't cheap but takes the load off of me since I have so many to support by myself. Had a HD in a Dell laptop pass on a few weeks ago, the Dell guy came out, installed the drive and did a base recovery install. I could do that myself but being the network engineer with 17 counties sitting around waiting for an install to go is a waste of my time.

One thing I'd do if you purchase a prebuilt is to reinstall Windows cleanly. Don't install any of the software you don't need. Install your antivirus (grisoft is good, nod32 is good) THEN attach it to the intarwebs for updates. Once done install ghost, make an image of the machine then stash it on the drive. If they ever screw it up you can restore the image. I have ghost images of all my machines, it makes my life easier.
