Default Thunderbirds

Today was the 52nd or 53rd consecutive year that the USAF Thunderbirds have done an airshow in Cheyenne during Frontier Days rodeo, and my six consecutive year watching them. I don't think it will ever get old.

My favorite part every year is when four planes are flying in formation out in front of the stands, holding your attention, then the other two come from behind at about 2,000' and going about mach .9. You know it's coming, you expect it, you can even turn around and see them coming, but you're still going to reflexively duck anyway.

They show up here on Sunday every year and start practicing for the Wednesday show, and the flight patterns take them right over my house. Good entertainment for a couple hours.

If you get a chance to take in a show this summer I highly recommend it, well worth the parking and traffic hassles.

We had the blue angels here a couple weekends ago. It is always a great show. I don't think I have ever seen the thunderbirds though, probably pretty similar.

Last time I saw an airshow it was back in summer 03 where they were commemorating flight in Dayton. They had the canadian team, the blue angels, and the thunderbirds there at the same time. I thought the thunderbirds show that day was much better than the blue angels, but they're all pretty entertaining to watch.

About 20 years ago the Blue Angels did a show outside Denver that I went to, and they have one maneuver they did where they all six fly from different directions and cross right in front of the grandstand. I pointed my camera at the spot where I hoped they'd meet and pressed the shutter at what I hoped was the right time. Ended up with a near perfect shot of all six planes converging. Still have that one hanging on the wall.
