Oh, and since this is at the top again... people were much nicer than I was led to believe they would be towards American tourists.

That's been my experience as well. My work has taken me to Paris a number of times, Lyon a few, and even Annecy a couple. I've never had a bad experience while in France, despite not being able to speak the language beyond a very few phrases.

Geneva, Switzerland, however, was a somewhat different story. I found that some people could be quite rude if you did not speak French.

The French secretly love us. I've always enjoyed going to France and have never encountered the rude-towards-Americans attitute that people always seem to talk about.
