I have mono
I've been sick with a bad sore throat for about the last week, found out yesterday that it's mono. I'm trying to choke down all the milk shakes, cereal, applesauce, and soup I can, but I'm already down to 185lbs. Can't lift for at least 4 weeks, and then shortly after that I get married and have a honeymoon, so training will be sparatic for the next couple months. But rest assured, this fall and winter will not be play time in the gym. I've been hovering around 200 for too long. The gym and the buffett will be my best friends, and I'm not stopping until I hit a solid 220.
I'm also thinking about making this a little experiment as well, not using a single supplement, not even a post-workout drink. The more I really think about it and listen to guys I respect, the more I think that supplements are a bunch of unnecessary crap. I've never heard a real world, big strong dude who gains nothing from sales say how great 'supplement x' is, they tell you how great the chinese buffett down the street is. Can a big load of processed sugars really be better than oats and a banana? Do you need a super high insulin spike after training when you've been eating all day? So, no processed post-workout drinks, no protein powders, no BCAA's, no ZMA, not even creatine. I'll keep taking fish oil and glucosamine though, I'm talking about 'performance enhancing' supplements. The training will be simple and so will the diet.

Sucks to hear, man. Get healthy. Just think, I've been complaining about my allergies kicking in early this year.

Jason, that sucks. My son had a very bad case two years ago. Don't push to get back too soon. You can damage your spleen.

That sucks. It will take a while to get over this. Take care of yourself and as Bill said, this isn't the time to push yourself.

Jason,
I'm ignorant in muscles. I've just started BOM-beg and I'm having fun.
Your message confused me. How would chinese buffett help in muscle development? It's full of sodium and other unhealthy stuff (read it recently in NY Times article.) How can eating a lot of rice/pork translates to muscle and not fat/heart disease? I'm not questioning your judgement (you seem expert!), I just need to learn more. Get well!

Maher

I had mono a couple years ago, lost about 10 pounds total and it was a mild case, the best advice I can give is drink as many shakes as possible and don't be shy about the whole milk. Also when coming back take it slow as you can get sick very easily as you are coming back, it took 2 months before I was lifting anything close to normal.
Good luck

I had a severe case of mono over 10 years ago. There was a period in between the sore throat and the finally getting back to life that I don't even remember. I thought I was off work for three weeks, but I soon found out it was 6! Where'd those three weeks go?
From what the doctor told me, the healthier you are when you get it, and the more you're willing to rest and eat to recover, the milder it can be.
So, take care of yourself!

It was more of a comment about how just eating a lot of food is the key to muscle growth, and supplements don't do shit. Yes chinese buffett's are horrible for your health and eating them daily would be bad, but it's a lot of calories which never hurts when you're trying to gain weight. That was a little bit of an exaggeration I guess.
And thanks for the well wishes people, it's going to be rough not doing anything. I've been sendentary for two days and it's killing me already.

I had mono a while back. I was lucky though, i was knocked out cold the first days, but i was only really sick for about a week. You could be one of the lucky ones, keep the chin up!
Though, i managed to get a bacterial infection in my throat at the same time as mono, so my throat was as tight as a (insert random very tight object here )

Hope you get well quickly, Jason. Best of luck. My daughter had mono last year and other than the initial nasty sore throat, her symptoms were rather mild and she recovered quickly. Hope it's the same for you.

Rest and follow your doctor's advice. Save your energy for the honeymoon.
