Try Control-Alt-Delete and bring up the task manager. See if something's running that you can kill in the processes tab. You can also restart from there and try to get it into safe mode on the way back up.
also see if you use the system restore tool, and set it back like a week. this should put your registry back to a working time and hopefully the spyware wont automaticaly reattach itself
When I reboot I get a message that "svchost.exe" can't write to certain memory addresses. And from there it's just a blank screen. I can bring up task mamager but I don't know what I'm looking at. On the reboot I cant get into safe mode.
This thing is a real insidious bastard.

IF YOU CAN GET INTO SAFE MODE:
1. when the computer starts to boot hit and hold f8. this should bring you to the windows boot menu
2. select "safe mode with networking" and hit ok. windows should load into safe mode.
3. you can still use explorer. go to download.com and download/install ad-aware and spybot. Be sure to update them before running. select full scan for ad-aware when you run it.
4. that should clear off all of the spyware. if you think it is a virus go to http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html and run their free online scan. Bitdefender is a pretty darn good scanner and should clear off any viruses you have (it will take a few hours to run however).
5. That should take care of the problem. This isn't a cure all but it tends to get most of the usual problems. If you have a more exotic issue this may not work.
IF YOU CANNOT GET INTO SAFE MODE BUT WINDOWS STARTS TO LOAD BEFORE FREEZING:
1. put the windows install disk into the computer and boot from the cd (it should prompt you with hit a key to boot from cd).
2. When windows install is done loading (this doesnt erase anything) hit R for the repair console.
3. Select the proper windows installation (there should only be one)
4. type "chkdsk /r" this tells windows recovery console to check the windows installation for errors and automatically correct them.
5. when it finishes type "exit" and see if it will boot into safe mode now.
If this helps at all just post an update and I can help you with the specifics if need be.
It's a known Windows problem that occcurs after some updates. I've had it on a couple of machines at my work, but I just put a new image on them. Google it and you may find an answer.

I'd try it but the computer is not letting me do anything right now.
I was on the computer and opened IE and there was a new home page (messenger site . net no space of course, don't go there). All of a sudden I was getting pop up ads by the dozens and the computer told me I was infected with spyware and it started downloading a spyware tool (B S 2.0) Of course it found the shit it put on there and then said if I wanted to clean it I'd need to buy the tool. I said no and that was it. Can't do a thing.
I went on my son's computer and found that the .net site is a known spyware site as is the BS program. I saw a lot of people with the same problem. As to how I got it I have no idea. I did not open any emails from someone that I did not know and didn't visit any sites that I don't normally go on (and no, I don't download porn). It's an old computer so I have to decide to either fix this (which looks like a disk wipe and reinstall) or upgrade to something newer. Not what I need right now.

What if you disconnected it from the Internet? Shut down, disconnect, then boot up. I've found in some of my computer battles that a lot of these virii rely on proliferating always-on connections. Once I was off the grid, I was better able to get a handle on things (provided you have stand-alone resources as well).

I know. I was almost at the point of some of those videos last night, the ones where the people take out their frustrations on the computer. Luckily though I have kids.
Just kidding about the kids. Not that I have them but I wouldn't take this out on them.

I didn't assume you would take it out on them, I assumed you were going to act muture so you weren't setting a bad example. You definately seem like the, "let's make love, not war" type of guy.
OG,
I was at my parent's house this weekend and my mom had this same virus on her computer. The folks at Compaq assured me it was a virus and offered to help me get rid of it for $69. I said no and ended up doing a system restore/recovery. It worked. The file that was holding it is called Brave Sentry (or at least thats what it was on mom's computer). I got rid of the file but still coudn't get rid of the little pop up for scanning for spyware and the offer to purchase their stuff....so thats when I did the system restore/recovery.
I don't know if this helps or not...or if you are beyond the point where her computer was....but I do know what virus you are referring to and I hope the file name helps!
