Lisa~ and any other Y trainers/trainees here can appreciate these. You would all be proud of my self-control.
These are from my workout yesterday:
I'm in the power rack doing BB rows, next to the Smith machine
Me: Sorry if the bar is in your way
Bench press addict: No problem. I've got lots of 45s here if you need them.
Me: Thanks, but no need, especially for rows. Maybe on deadlift day.
BPA: Have you seen that guy here who squats 500? I told him if he fell, he'd just die, cuz no spotters could save him.
Me: No, I've never seen anybody squat here except me.
BPA: Oh, I do 'em all the time, but here in this machine it's much safer. See, I can twist the bar and it catches, so I don't get crushed. It's really safe, you should try it. He proceeds to show me his "squats" with 135 lbs. and a 4-inch range of motion.
Me: OK, thanks!
Dumbell area, I'm doing OH press while sitting on a swiss ball (Berardi's MA)
Dude: Hey man, you're doing the Maxim workout!!
Me: Huh?
Dude: Maxim magazine! That exercise was in this month's issue.
Me: No, my routine is from a different book.
Dude: Oh, OK. It was in Maxim too, though

***John Izzo shakes his head and remembers being surrounded by this for 2+ years and actually getting requests by members to deplete his fitness department budget with purchases of smith bar cushions, ab rollers, TV stands, more plastic colored DBs, and more heart rate chart posters.***
Dang, I wanted to start quoting articles so badly and start talking about stabilizing muscles and forced planes of motion. But this guy didn't even realize that what he was standing in is called a Smith machine.
This is the YMCA that serves over 10,000 members, and has an article on post-workout nutrition on the wall of the free weights area. It says to get some carbohydrates after a workout, because carbs reenergize the muscles. A little bit of protein is OK, but not too much, because protein will hinder hydration.
My question to the author is what is a "little bit" of protein? And what's too much? Arrrggg... that place drives me crazy sometimes.

Just do your shit and ignore 'em Red. You can talk all you want but they ain't a changin'. Maybe if they saw you squatting and attracting all the chicks, but otherwise...
Tonight a guy asked me to spot his back squats. OK. At least he wasn't in the smith machine.
He does a few 1/4 squats with 225.
I tell him he should go lighter so he can do deeper etc...
He replies he doesn't wanna get too huge (he's about 30-40lbs overweight)
Good luck with all that.
And this is a "high-end" gym.

Working "hard," or the perception of working hard, doesn't really mean anything. Sweating, vomiting, and breathing hard could be a good workout or a tropical disease kicking in.-Dan John
I remember a time when I was a trainer at my first gig (which was a Y) and a guy asked me to spot him on a 315 bench. As I walked over to the back of the bench and he lay his head down, I began asking him the questions that every spotter should be asking:
1.) How many reps you gonna go for?
2.) Do you want a lift-off?
3.) Have you gotten this before?
This guy was getting so perturbed at me becuase he thought I was trying to "punk" him out, but I was asking for my own safety and to give him a good spot. He thought I was interrogating him and he actually, stopped, got up off the bench adn told me "I wasn't needed".
After I walked away, he asked some little kid who he told to just stand there.
