The soda market is expanding as fast as our youth (and vice versa).
I was getting breakfast last week at McD's (it was 6am, I was out in BFE and trying to beat a @#$#$ storm). The 4 folks in front of me ordered Coke with their meal despite being asked if they'd like juice, milk or coffee. Scary was the person behind me who ordered 2 of the "huge" sweat tea's from there. Ugh, no wonder she could barely walk.
What? It's got caffeine and sugar. Sounds like breakfast to me.

And, let me be the first: I've got something that will feel much better against the back of her throat first thing in the morning. There, that's out of the way.

I love that comment. 60 years? I don't think so.
I see the kids at the school bus stops every morning with cans of soda (yes, I call it pop) in their hands. But, what really bugs me is when my wife and I go to breakfast and a small child is allowed to have soda instead of milk or juice.

My kid had a sip of Coke when she was 4, didn't like it. Last year we went out for pizza one day, she had a sip of my rootbeer and liked it. She's not asked for it since. We don't buy it for home and the only time I order it out is if I'm having pizza (and then it's diet). Her drink of choice? Water.
I've seen kids with sode in BOTTLES - ya know, the kinds with nipples on 'em. That's good parenting. :P
I'm glad they mentioned the southern tendency for Diet Coke. I was about to comment on it!
Growing up in SC, tons of women had Diet Coke for breakfast. Woke them up "without getting them fat"! Ha!
I drank beer for breakfast in college for months.... just one. But I was an idiot then (shut up, OG!) and can't imagine drinking Diet Coke more than 2-3 times a YEAR, let alone every day for breakfast!

Saw the same thing growing up just up the road from you in North Carolina. (Am I the only one who likes a pack of shelled peanuts dumped into a bottle of Coke?) In fact, there's a great short-order soul food restaurant just down the street from my house (nothing like livermush-and-egg sandwiches for breakfast ), and they include a 20oz sweet tea with every order, including breakfast. I'll drink it every now and then when I'm up at 4am for work, but usually, it's two cups of coffee and then water the rest of the day (maybe a beer or two at night).
On the subject of water, has anyone tried those Crystal Light on-the-go single packs? My water intake has jumped back to summer levels using those things.

Have you ever wondered why Coke comes with a smile? It’s because it gets you high. They took the cocaine out almost a hundred years ago. You know why? It was redundant.
In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.
20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (There’s plenty of that at this particular moment)
40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.
45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.
>60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.
>60 Minutes: The caffeine’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that you’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water.
>60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.
This will all be followed by a caffeine crash in the next few hours. (As little as two if you’re a smoker.) But, hey, have another Coke, it’ll make you feel better.
Technorati Tags: coke, effects, pharmacology, soda, caffeine, sugar *FYI: The Coke itself is not the enemy, here. It’s the dynamic combo of massive sugar doses combined with caffeine and phosphoric acid. Things which are found in almost all soda.
Ill have a can of tuna, veggies and a diet coke for breakfast more then id like to admit. Time of day doesnt mean much to me.
That being said, im pretty sure im addicted to diet pop at least a little.
Before I started lifting weights, when I was more into mountaineering, It wasnt uncommon for me to drink 6-8 cans of coke in a day (full sugar). That had to be good for me.. People just dont know better and there are still people out there thinking "it has no fat in it!!".
The only time I drink leaded soda is on LONG (3+ hour) rides, in an emergency (happened once). My buddy and I had both dropped our gels on the climb, and came to a convenience store fresh out of energy. It got me home.
2 cups of coffee, tons of water, and a bit of green or white tea for me. I love a good Diet Dr. Pepper, but that's only a few times a week

That's exactly my usual daily fluid intake plus a beer or three when I go out some nights. Just something about a DDP tastes better than a Diet Coke, yet I can go two months on a single 12-pack. Go figure.

Doesn't surprise me. I remember that "Coke in the morning" ad campaign the article refers to.
Is Coke Blak available nationwide yet? For the uninitiated, it's a mixture of Coke and coffee. And since it's "special" it's $2.00 a bottle -- priced like an "energy drink" rather than traditional pop, but I can't figure out the difference between the two. Marketing research indicates that Coke Blak will be a big seller as a morning drink.

LMFAO!!!! I almost spit my Coke all over my keyboard. j/k. Only water for me.
I drink about 1 or 2 cans of pop per month. I work with someone who buys what looks like a half gallon of non-diet pop every morning...and she wonders why she can't lose weight walking 30 minutes a day on the treadmill.

I could down a 12-pack of Coke Zero a day, easy. I limit myself to 1-2 cans a day, but that shit is goooood.
If I couldn't get coffee in the morning I could make due with a CZ. And Americanos are the only thing I've ever ordered from Starbucks, one or two a week. I love those things.

Youve got to remember that most people don't count calories that they drink as calories ingested.
Some people have no idea but I find it hard to believe that they can argue that it has no fat therefore its better then the next thing. I had a client for cholestrol maintanence that was drinking coke because of the no fat factor. Insane.
I have done that lots before. My friend and I would get up at 5am to go skiing and we would all grab a 2L of Jolt and drink it on the way. Before I started drinking coffee a couple years ago I would drink diet Pepsi or Coke in the am. People would bug me, but it is no real different than drinking coffee except one is cold and one is hot. They both are not good for you and have caffine and sugar in them (unless diet or spenda).

Are coffee and Coke comparable in their acid content? I'd think Coke would be a bit more detrimental to the body in that regard.

I drink a lot of caffiene, too. I can down a pot and go right to sleep, though.
!!! I can't do that, although sometimes I do have a cup before a 9PM workout if I am feeling groggy. Actually, lately I have been drinking hot green tea pre-workout instead... except that I'm using 2 or 3 teabags per cup to get more of a caffeine jolt out of it.
I wish it would keep me up. There are some times when I needed it and couldn't stay awake at all. Sucks.
I've even cut down to zero for months, then tried to use it to stay awake. Nothing. Although, I was pretty hyper, nervous, and twitchy as I dozed off...
