Default Eugene, OR - Anyone live or lived there?

There's the possibility that we will be moving out to Eugene, OR and wanted to get some other perspectives out there. Perhaps gyms, but just in general what you like and dislike about it.

From what I've seen so far (just searches on the internet) the outdoor activities look limitless, but it appears to be pretty expensive to live there.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris, I've been through Eugene a number of times on roadtrips but haven't spent a lot of time there. Seems like a nice spot. University town feel to it - loads of young people. You might want to PM mmMatt - he's from Hillsboro, OR, although that's up closer to Portland, I believe. Why are you headed to the west coast?

I am no help - I lived there for two years in high school. I absolutely loved it but that was high school.

I will tell you that the blackberries grew wild, delicous and fat and sweet. There were so many that I always had as many as I wanted when they were in season.

We're just north of Eugene. We live in Corvallis; which is like a 30-minute drive north.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Eugene - the planning of that "town", is kinda all over da place. For such a "hippie" town, it doesn't look like it in a lot of areas. Heh. But it is home to U of O and the area around the campus, as well as the campus itself, is very nice.

However, there is a Golds Gym there, and numerous MMA fights go on down there, too. I often go to Eugene to shop at the Oregon Art Store that's there and there's also a couple of REALLY nice restaurants. As usual to such towns in Oregon, there are a couple of small, locally owned theaters that play quite a bit of indie features - that's a plus, for sure! Not sure if any of 'em serve beer, but that wouldn't surprise me if they did.

So that's my quick review of Eugene. Hope it helps!

Edit to add: I see you think it's expensive to live in Eugene. It's not as expensive as Portland, that's for sure. It's comparable to Corvallis and they're both college towns so much of the pricing caters mostly to college students. So there should be some deals about.

Thanks for all of the replys.

We'd be moving out there for my work...possibly. I'm going out there for an in person interview in the first week of February. The office, I found out, is right downtown...where they have the open air market?

Patricia, I thought you guys lived out there, but I wasn't sure. Not sure about going to Golds Gym, but it might be the only choice for awhile (until I build my own...perhaps). Glad to hear that it's not as expensive as Portland...but it's still expensive compared to the midwest.

If anything the recreation opportunities will be awesome out there...which is something that is about non-existent in Iowa...unless you count beer drinking as a hobby!

Thanks again for all of the replys.

Just a heads up, Chris.

We are currently adding more and more items to our implements at home. Just got a new APT car/truck pulling harness and plan on usin' it...a LOT. Will be adding a couple more tires to the two we already have for flipping.

Right now, we're looking for someone to help us build some farmer walk implements. We also have two sets of kettle bells.

Once we have everything (we also have LOTS of boxing/mma training equipment) - we're going full-on into strongman training on our property.

You're invited to join, if you'd like. I'll keep ya posted on the progress.

If we move out there you'll have to kick me off or your property! I've been wanting to start training strong man for quite awhile (despite being totally weak), but just haven't done it.

On farmers check out Jesse Marundes site. There's a guy there that builds pretty cheap farmers, I've heard and high quality (Pitbull Equipment).

Later,
CD
