Hopefully we can get some good suggestions up here. I know there has to be some people who have the same taste in music as me. I love old school rap, classic rock, new garage rock, REAL punk, blues, etc. That said, here are a few downloadable or buyable suggestions.. plus, for most, you can listen to sound samples on amazon.. but the whole songs are a must!
Rock:
King Khan and BBQ: The King Khan and BBQ Show
I can't say enough on how awesome this album is. If you're a fan of 60s rock you'll love this. Both are brilliant artists. You'll have a hard time tracking down this album though, as it's out of print. My sister actually picked up a copy for me when she saw them in Indy. I got a chance to see them in concert, and they were one of the best concerts i've seen. It's a 2 man band, with Khan coming out in a dress most of the time, but they sound like a 4 piece. I can't say enough on how great these guys are in concert.. if they EVER come close to anyone, i would encourage you to see them.
Here's their myspace profile: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...iendid=9269809
give "Waddlin' Around" a listen.
The Ponys: Laced with Romance or Celebration Castle
Both are AWESOME albums. This is the way rock on the radio should be. Reminds me a lot of the band "Television"... sounds a lot like Richard Hell. I got to see these guys in concert and they were great. I don't know why they aren't more popular, as each album they put outs gets better and better.
"Glass Conversation" and "Another Wound" are both excellent.
The Deadly Snakes: ANYTHING by them
These guys are a great Canadian band who played their last show last year. It's sad, but they put out a SOLID 4 albums. Very Beatlesque, and one of the only bands no-adays to use an organ, and horns, and gospel. Comparisons to Dylan and the Stones.
"Debt Collection" off Porcella
"There Goes Your Corpse Again" from Ode to Joy
Andre Ethier: Secondathallam
Guy from the deadly snakes who sounds like dylan in a lot of the songs, but writes great tunes.
"Don't Let this mean out world swallow you" and "You Can't Be Satisfied"
Punk:
The Hunches: Yes. No. Shut It.
This album is a unique taste. I didn't like it at first, but it became one of my favorite albums. Vicious. They actually recorded this in a way so there is a lot of background noise. They even ran a vaccum cleaner during one of the songs to get more noise. And, that's what the album is about, NOISE. Reminds me a lot of Iggy Pop in the way he snarls.
"Lisa Told Me" deserves a listen as one of the slower songs, and any other one for fast. They have a myspace profile, but i don't the songs work on them, unfortunately.
Jay Reatard: Blood Visions
real fast punk rock. "It's so Easy" is good. "All over again" is good as well. He's put out a ton of albums, and a lot of them have been awesome. Myspace profile: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=11374565
that's it for now. Give some of these a listen, and post your own!
Interesting stuff Alco. I'm not familiar with any of those artists.
I just watched "We Jam Econo", a docu about The Minutemen, a seminal CA punk band from San Pedro. They were on the scene with Black Flag, The Descendents, but in my opinion were more musically interesting.
Paranoid Time. Released in 1980 on Ian MacKaye's SST Records (002).

The minutemen were great. Double Nickles on the Dime is a great album... has something like 40 tracks, each around a minute long... the LP version has a few more songs than the cd, i believe.

I thought movie was great.
This book is definitely worth reading f you're into any of the bands/scene:

Good one, Hard Rox! I'll chip in one of my favorites:
My real choices would be anything by The Urge or Nuno Bettencourt (formerly of Extreme). Most of Nuno's recent stuff is only available in Japan, but it can be imported.

I'm checking out "The Good, the Bad and the Queen" right now.
It's okay, but a little subdued. Was hoping Tony Allen would be tearing it a bit more. Talk about a super group lineup:
Damon Albarm (Blur)
Paul Simon (Clash)
Simon Tong (The Verve)
Tony Allen (Fela's Arica 70)
Produced by DangerMouse
Good call & thanks for reminding me!
Alco, you a fan of Firehose too?

Yep, Japan is the only place where those early 90's guitar heroes (aside from Satriani and Vai) still get some props. Yngwie (the puffy version) still plays there - you can find clips on Youtube.
Paul Gilbert of Mr. Big lives in Tokyo. Studies at a Japanese language school, the whole enchilada. One of my former coworkers ran into him on the subway there.

Well, if any of the rest are like Finger Eleven, good rock. Kinda hard some, kinda metal some (but not in an 80s heavy metal way). Tip and Greyest of Blue Skys are great to start.
i don't think i've ever heard them... what should i start w/?
Firehose is Mike Watt & George from The Minutemen. Mid-80s to early 90's. start here. My favorite record is "Ragin' Full On".

I introduced JP to this group already. Still one of my favorite albums in the past 5 years: Gotan Project "Le Revancha del Tango".

Great Tuvan group! I've seen them a few times, once out on Sado Island so they seem to be known in Japan.

For those interested the Pogues are doing a few east coast dates around St. Pat's Day (I think NYC, Philly and Boston). I saw them last year and they were still pretty good (not sure how much longer Shane will be able to perform).

If you like it I've got an advance copy of the entire album that comes out next month so I could up it if you want it.
yea, i heard most of the album already. i also got a copy of it. I really want a copy of their single... mostly because it's limited to 1000, but also b/c cave etched a drawing on it, which is cool. thanks
