Does anyone have a suggestion on a free (legal) download site?
If not, where could I find one that is fee for song? I don't want to have to pay a monthly subscription fee. Just pay for my one song and be done.
gym, iTunes will have free music sometimes, they have "monthly picks" or "new artists" that they'll drop a tune from. Download.com has a lot of free music, either indie bands that are new or some old stuff that isn't selling - you're probably not going to get your Britney or Paris fix from here.
eMusic is pretty good, it's 15.00 or so bucks/mo. Myself I just ripped all of my CDs onto my Mac then bought a subscription to XM. Best investment I've ever made.
I buy "Best of..." when I can find them and rip away. Find a good CD ripper with error correction, adjustable VBR and can set the minimum Khz and you're set. I use CDex (it's free).
For those occasions when a song I like isn't on a "Best Of...," I buy the single.
I rip them from my own CDs too. If I want to buy a song, I usually just go through iTunes since that's what I use to play my mp3s anyways. It's usually only 99 cents a song.
1. ripping from CDs
2. buying via iTunes or other websites like iTunes, such as this one
3. go on MySpace.com a lot of artists put certain tracks available to download on their pages -- just look where you add it to your profile, sometimes they let you download
I got iTunes but damn it all, I have a Palm Pilot that plays my mp3's and they format iTunes uses is m4p. I can't convert it over to Realplayer which is the only thing that my Palm recognizes. Shit.
I have used this site (http://www.mp3raid.com/) but I'm very, very leery of it. I only got a couple songs, but I'm not confident in using it all that much.
Anyone with advice?

I'm sure there's an easier way, but every once in a while, I get a coupon or something from iTunes. I burn them onto a CD-RW, then RIP them back to WMA or MP3 (for your Palm). I'm sure you lose something in the translation, but I'm not a audiophile, especially for gym time.
