When I got my new computer it came with Windows XP as the operating system. Ok, great. It also had Word and Excel. However whenever I go into either of those programs it asks me for a security/purchase code???? I know what they want, but I don't know how to give it to them. Normally I'd look on the back of the jewel case of the software I purchased, but they were on the computer when I bought it! How do I add the purchase code so I can use them??? Help!
Maybe in the paperwork that you got with the computer (backup disks) there's a "Certificate of Authenticity" or something. Also, I think nowadays, they're putting the XP authentication on the CPU itself...so maybe check on the bottom or back of your computer.

Damn, is there anything you aren't good at? Sheesh. Lefty - you better hang onto this young lady
The paperwork is unfortunately (and accidentally) tossed now. I never thought about trying the bottom or back of the 'puter. I'll check it out.
Thanks.
I did just find a product code on the back of the 'puter. It's 25 digits and that's what the code says it wants, but when I typed it in, it told me it was invalid! SHit!

I can't copy/past it, but here's what it says when I open Word:
Wants user name, initials, organization. Then - "In the boxes below, type your 25 character Product Key. You will find this number on the sticker on the back of the CD case or on your Certificate of Authenticity"
Problem: I don't have the CD case, it was already loaded when I bought the computer. I don't recall seeing anything noted as being my "certificate of authenticity".

Anyone else with suggestions?
type it in directly; put your name in the user fields. (better yet, just put Terry or something)

You should have a tiny little manual that basically worthless. Probably still shrinkwrapped. On the back of that should be the code. You don't even have to open the book (or the shrinkwrap).

Yes exactly - even if you did find it, probably a 90 trial...
Another option is to get on with Gmail and use the basic online word processor/spreadsheet they offer. Great service if you don't require anything advanced.
