What does UpdaterUI.exe do besides slow down my computer? I have to go into my Task Manager all the time to shut this sucker down so that pages will load, etc. It's a pain in the ass.

This program is part of McAfee's security software suite, and this is considered a safe program. If you installed their anti-virus software then you most likely will see this task. (See the details below for the actual location of this file.) Actual file or task name:
updaterui.exe File type:
This is an executable program. File or folder location:
This will be located on your harddrive at C:\Program Files\Network Associates\Common Framework\ General information:
Be aware that many tasks will be similiar names to existing tasks or processes. You can always view the running tasks on your computer by pressing ctrl-alt-del to view the windows "task manager", and then view the "processes" tab. This will show you all tasks running or currently active on your PC. Although this shows you all running tasks, it does not show dll file thats are loaded, as they get loaded as part of other processes. Many spyware writers attempt to hide their files on your computer, for example, updaterui.exe may be intentionally misspelled to look like a similiar task, or spyware may be named very similiar to a Windows system task. The reason they do this is so you cannot easily recognize the name in your tasklist as I have mentioned above. Make sure always check the location of the file if you are concerned. You can always find the location of updaterui.exe on your computer by using your Windows search options, but I will also try to list the file location of every file described on this website, so you can verify the correct location. You can view the entire tasklist directory with the link below.

Yeah that is part of the McAfee subsystem that handles updateing. It shouldn't be slowing you down though. Even when updates get rolled out it only jumps to 1 or 2% proc usage. Typically it just sits idle in the background at 0. Is yours running higher?
I used McAfee for about a week when I got my first computer before going to Norton. Last month, I ditched it for AVG and have seen a huge improvement in computer performance (now if only Firefox wouldn't bloat itself so much).

I think it's safe to say that all Anti-virus software is going to slow down your machine somewhat. I runs in the background and monitors the system pretty much constantly.
Norton sucks it slows me down use mcafee!
Mcafee sucks it slows down my computer use Norton!
Whatever.

I agree with Og. I've had issues with both Norton and McAfee slowing my system down, noticeably. From what I've tried, CA anti-virus has seemed to have the smallest "footprint" on my system resources.
I'm not saying any one is better than the other. However unless this is your home computer, the solution isn't to uninstall one and install another one. In a corp environment having people using whichever av program they like best is a disasterous situation to be in.
All of these work fine as a stand alone product, and if you are noticing significant slowdowns there is an issue somewhere else on your system. Either an issue that conflicts with the use of a certain AV program, or an issue that the av program is doing more than it should have to. either that, or you are trying to run a newer scanner on a dinasaur computer. =-)
We had some problems like that at work with Trend OfficeScan. Once I changed the update settings to once/day the clients calmed down - they were checking for updates every couple of hours. I also changed scans to every Wednesday at noon instead of daily at noon.
