I need some help finding a decent wireless router that offers access control that actually works. I'll need to be able to block access by time of day and also by MAC address for other times. I've tried different routers and none of them will do what I want.
Ideally, if someone knows of good firmware for the Linksys WRT54G that would be great as I have a couple of those laying around the house. If I have to I'll pick up the AirPort Extreme next month even though it doesn't have gigabit ethernet ports. But otherwise it looks like it will do exactly what I want.

The short answer is that while you're an animal in the gym, you're a p*ssy in the kitchen." - Chris Shugart

Go to the linksys site, they should have what you need.
Although if you have a mac, you're going to need the program that opens up .exe files.

It's not a beer belly. It's a gas tank for a sax machine.

What do you NEED gigabit ports for exactly?

That's why I'll probably buy one anyway because I can't imagine why I would need them. I'm sure someday that sentence will be laughable but for now it's not like I'm streaming HD or anything.

I'm fairly certain that the standard Linksys firmware for this router does not offer reliable access control....at least they didn't when I used this router a year ago but I'll go check again

can you program/script it in - have you checked with any of the open source / router script type forums?
Yeah, I did post over on www.dslreports.com on the Linksys forum but sometimes questions don't get answered over there. But I'll probably try DD-WRT or Sveasoft firmware if nobody knows of anything better.

I use DD-WRT at home, and I know that I've seen access control from within there, but to be honest, since I don't use it, I didn't pay all that much attention to this feature. Still, you're most likely best off with a 3rd-party firmware.
