I watched Planet of the Apes, too! My favorite line is from the end, after Charlton Heston shaves his beard: "Somehow... it makes you look less intelligent."
Did you catch the part during the tribunal when the three orangutans do the see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil thing? While Zera is blaspheming.
i got flags of our fathers in the mail today, along with "after innocence" from netflix. I didn't think they came out for awhile still, but i'm happy i got them!

Yeah, I am getting Flags of Our Fathers today in the mail from Blockbuster.
And concerning Shymalan's "editing" handicap. If I recall the people at the studio that normally distributes his movies (including his editor) begged him to NOT make that movie. But he insisted that he was going to make it and went elsewhere. Lesson learned I suppose.
Also, I saw a cool trailer for a movie coming out soon. 1408.....starring John Cusack. Based off of a Stephen King short story. Looks pretty cool.
I agree, "Kill Bill" or "Station Agent." I found "Van Helsing" a bit too silly. No where near the entertaining camp of "Army of Darkness" which seems to have raised the bar to an unsurpassable level. Then again, Cambell pulled it off beautifully.

Van Helsing stank like rotten poo poo. And hopefully it made Steven Somers go back to what made his first two films, "Deep Rising" and "The Mummy" pretty darn good.
I particularly LOVE "Deep Rising". Whenever it's on cable, I find myself unable to pull away from the TV. The fun that the actors are having and the terrifically campy story (yes, THIS is campy), is contagious every time.
Next movie, besides "300" I want to see in the theater?
That would be "Sunshine" and the person behind this one is none other than Danny Boyle. The dude who brought us, "Trainspotting", "28 Days Later" and "Millions".
This trailer looks amazing. And while it looks like every principal cast member (included Cillian Murphy, Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans [Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four], at least that's who these people looked like), dies in this one, the action sequences just look mindblowing.
Helps the music is from (composer) Clint Mansell's "Requiem for a Dream". Gawd, I love his stuff.

A few issues I have up front about this movie from the commercial:
1. It appears they may be adding some moderness to it, such as a modern sense of humor and sarcasm ("Can't we be civel about this"). I'm a bit of a purist, so to draw on a recent note, I hated "Van Helsing" because of the addition of a semi-automatic crossbow, a monk that get's laid and some other aspects and cliches'. Another good example was "King Aurthur" where the protagonist kept citing how history will remember them.
2. There may be a larger than life exhaggeration, the kind seen in "Troy" with Pitt's rendition of Achilles. Can't a director/writer/actor make people heroic without making them some over-the-top fantasy? This is beginning to become cliche'.
The movie may be good, but it might also fall flat from it.
As pure entertainment and a movie where the actors didn't take the material seriously (c'mon there are some REALLY good actors in this movie) and as a playful homage to past Universal greatness - it suceeded.
I have this DVD and I STILL watch it as it's sometimes the lighthearted flick I'm needed to watch.
Now, go watch that trailer for "Sunshine" that I posted above, it'll be good for you.

I'll wait and see.
1) Then don't go see this movie. (And if you thought a movie about Frankenstein, the Wolfman and Dracula would be an exact representation of historical details......dude......)
2) Don't compare this to drek like "Troy". That movie was a mess. Zack Snyder, director of this one and the "Dawn of the Dead" remake is one smart cookie. BTW, have you READ the graphic novel? Snyder just about recreated the art in the graphic novel and placed onto film. The story also, is amazing. Frank Miller did one hell of a job in writing (and in the art) of that book.
And your last sentence - exactly why I want to see this movie. I want to see for myself how all that hard work....worked.

Ah, but there is long folklore history surrounding golems (even though Frankentein's critter was more than a golem), lycanthropes and vampires, stretching all the way back to the celtic period.
Oh, and I rarely see movies in the theater these days. I tend to wait for the DVD.

I do know that. BUT did you REALLY think that "Van Helsing" would be so careful with historical references?

In many cases now, I have no choice but to wait until a DVD is out. We're in a college town and well, the good stuff often passes by.
But the DVDs are cool if they include commentary and "making of" featurettes - I can watch (and listen) to that stuff forever.
And speaking of Zach Snyder (aka, the one who has actually seen a real live vagina....:p), I watched Dawn of the Dead yet again the other day and it reminded me how awesome it was. I didn't realize that this was the same dude who did 300.
The two movies I am most looking forward to are 300 and Grindhouse.
PS: watching Flags of Our Fathers this weekend, along with The Illusionist.

And Snyder is now working on "Watchmen". And he gets the story and the ideas he has for this movie sound very cool.
