Alright, now that I've got DSL I think I can enter the world of iPods. Without having done a web search yet, can you all tell me how it works? I assume you go out and download songs to your hard drive, then via a USB you load them to the iPod and you're set to go?
What iPods (or other name mp3's) do you have/suggest?
What websites are good for downloads/price/variety?
you don't automatically have to pay to download music onto your ipod- you can upload all of your cds onto it. ipods automatically use itunes to upload music, and it's not a horrible site to dload from. you can not use napster with ipods unless you want to download the music, burn it to cds and then load it onto your ipod. the video ipods are amazing, one of the guys i work with has a video ipod and the screen is wonderful.
yep yep, depending on your computer's speed it can be a fast upload or a slow upload. you can also pick and choose which tracks you want on your mp3 player so you don't have to have the entire cd if you don't want it. (tha'ts my favorite part) i only use itunes because i don't want to get caught with illegal downloads. i do have mixed cds from friends- and i have no idea where that music has come from but oh well.
there is the illegal downloading option and there are heaps of sites that you can download from. If you want to explore that avenue then do a search for torrents.
There are so many different ipods out there. Chose the one that suits your needs. Mine was one of the originals so doesn't have the cool accessaries that others have, like a band to wrap the ipod to your arm so you can wear it working out etc.
Not trying to steal the thread, but this could pertain to it. Does anyone know of a good software to turn CD's(from my collection) on my computer into mp3's to be listened to on an IPOD?

You can also download them, but if you decide to remove it to make space for something else, then change your mind, I think you have to pay again (you can't move a song from the MP3 to computer).

If you mean a real iPod and you are not just using the term for a generic mp3 player, as it stands right now you would need to use iTunes.
Og.

Ipods are only popular because they're trendy and because people want to be like everybody else.
From a business standpoint, they are popular because they were the first to make a large-capacity portable MP3 player that was small and easy to use. In addition, they developed the first viable pay-for-song platform in iTunes. From there, Apple kept updating, improving and innovating and that is why they still have close to 70% of the market share for MP3 players.
Generally, technological devices don't get mass market penetration because they are simply trendy - they also have to deliver the advantages and benefits consumers want.
I'm kinda with marc. What are you going to use it for?\Do you really need an ipod? I've got a 1GB flash player (more songs than I'll ever listen to in a week) that I don't even notice, has 30hrs of battery life so I can forget to charge it several times before it matters, that cost $130 brand new (mabey less now).
I got it to listen to music while I workout and run...it plays music while I workout and run. I admit to not "getting" the ipod thing, but unless you're going to be doing something pretty special, why?
I agree 100% gobbla. Enter the iPod shuffle. Very cool looking. Lightweight and clippable, 1gb of songs, under $100.
It is the only iPod I would consider, everything else is serious overkill for me.

One of the reasons I like my iPod so much is because iTunes is so easy to use. I had another mp3 player before and the software would lock up my computer, there were problems with compatibility, blah, blah, blah. There was always something. With my iPod (I have the 30g video iPod, but get the one that suits you best), I never have compatibility troubles or software slowdowns. I subscribe to the podcasts I like and they automatically d/l into iTunes. You can upload your CD's with iTunes. It's just very user friendly.
Besides the two power books (one G4 and a newer G5), and the big ol' G5 dual that I'm using right now (for animation, artwork, school, etc.) - we have three iPods.
Ko bought me the 30g vid for my birthday last year, a few months before that he got a Nano and recently, he rec'd a free new 30g vid for when he purchased the Mac Book Pro.
I use mine for not only music, but to watch episodes of Battlestar Galatica that I've missed, listen to podcasts, and to keep my animated shorts and portfolio near to show to anyone interested. Oh and the photo album is helpful, too. Ko keeps his Nano in the car and I'm getting a setup for the other car, so that I don't have to listen to the radio and carry CDs all the time.
Oh, and since I'm learning Japanese, I use the iPod for that, too (and Cantonese and Mandarin).
iTunes is incredibly easy to use and so are the iPods. Can't recommend them highly enough.

iPods are a no-brainer. You can't go wrong with one.
If you want cheaper or for it to do something unusual, then you might need to look elsewhere. I wanted FM radio, a voice recorder, and a display, all in a Shuffle-like size. Creative Nano. It would be nice if it recharged when plugged into the USB port, but rechargeable aaa batteries are working ok.
The one thing that make it all worthwhile. These headphones.
That iPod Shuffle is wicked cool and for under $100 it doesn't seem like you could go wrong..... but still. I've had lots of friends tell me in the past couple days to go with a lesser known/generic mp3 player and save the extra $$ they all work pretty much the same. I'm just after a basic device. No frills needed..................... I say that now.
