What makes you think that the researches (or assholes) who did this, have any qualifications to: "cure the common cold, cancer or heart disease"?
Excuse, me. They are not assholes but highly educated people who find it necessary to develop useless technology. Of course, if they implant a voice module, they may have developed the next generation Billy Bass.
While they cannot cure the diseases mentioned, one would hope that they would use their knowledge of robotics to help the handicapped to function better, by way of robotics, implants, etc. Developing a robot fish does not seem to me to have that end in mind.

Don't worry, John -- have you seen the movie "Blade Runner"? Lots of robotic animals in that film, and the technology was put to good use for humanity.
Before long we'll have replicants to do our menial labor, and occasionally they'll wax philosophical as their limited life spans end. In the dark. In the rain.

Not worrying. Just caught me on a bad day. We don't need replicants to do our menial labor. We already have illegal immigrants. No technology required.
Great movie, by the way.

Random Friday?
First, I can't be replaced...
Second, maybe it's just me, but I think it's cool. I've seen mechanical sharks that are helping us understand them better. Applications are what they are. Maybe this will help us understand what really goes on under da sea.
Third, I'm glad this guy isn't working on a cure for cancer. Can't imagine what I would do with that thing in my pants.
Finally, illegal immigrants might have to be replaced with these things, the way we're going.

John, I have to agree with you here. I think the money wasted on this could be put to better use as well as the time and brainpower it took to make a robotic fish. Crazy world!

We have assholes out there creating robot fish and we can't cure the common cold, cancer or heart disease. May the fish bite him in the ass.
But what if the same technology that went into this is used to develop some kind of robotic limb to replace limbs on amputees? Without knowing anything about that fish, other than the video showing it working, it's hard to say what the deal is with the "researchers". Besides, it's probably a bunch of electrical and/or mechanical engineers that built that thing... would you want those kind of engineers trying to cure cancer?!
