Thumbs up Budweiser's Salute to 9/11

(below is the way this was sent to me except I had to upload the file to provide the link)

This commercial was only shown once on the anniversary of 9/11, I don't know the time of day it ran and hate that I missed it.

They only aired it once so as not to benefit financially from it, just wanted to acknowledge the tragic event. Be patient while it downloads, it is totally worth it.

With tissue in hand,

Budweiser's Salute to 9/11

Oh, c'mon! Y'all didn't think this was pretty cool? I got all misty eyed when I saw it.

I liked it, Q. It was understated and classy. Glad it was only run once though - you wouldn't want to see any company profitting off 9-11 emotions.

Understated and classy or a brilliant marketing move by marketers who have their fingers firmly on the pulse of the internet "viral" video concept.

You be the judge.

I take your point, Og. It crossed my mind as well, though I was trying to give 'em the benefit of the doubt. I will return to my usual cynical self now ...

I have an easier time believing a beer company has an angle than a beer company doing a selfless act.

How about instead of the commerical design, production costs, air time etc, they donated some cash to help people out who were hurt by the disaster?

Innocent: Sniff, sniff... that was so moving...
Naive: Wow, that was neat. And rare restraint to only show it once.
Slightly cynical: Eh, it was OK. But seemed a little manipulative.
Cynical: Nice marketing campaign. Maybe next is a holocaust commercial.
Scary cynical: You know, I bet the stress of 9/11 was great for alcohol sales.

I didn't watch it, yet, but this is my initial impression.

Yeah and if I couldn't find the term in a tonne of other places I might be concerned, but I can, so I'm not.

Either way, even without viral video, corporations are about money, which I am ok with. I honestly do not believe they did not look at the financials of such an ad, even if it was as simple as if we do this we will look like awesome guys and people will think of us when they are in the liquor stores.

Viral marketing is a valid term that we even studied in my MBA program in the late 90s. The Blair Witch Project was one of the great film examples of viral marketing using the web. Snakes on a Plane is a more recent example.
