Does anyone else have "sick" pets?? A few months ago, we found out our 7 year old Lab, Honey, was diabetic, and also has low thyroid hormone. She needs two insulin injections a day, and needs thyroid meds 2x a day also. We must really love this dog!!
My German Shepherd has irritable bowel syndrome. Home made food cured it. I've been cooking for her for five years - takes a lot to feed a 70 pound dog. She is 14 now, and other than a hip problem, she is doing great.
Oh, and the hip problem is neurological. So, we're scheduled to see a specialist. At $150 per office visit plus tests.
So, I understand completely. Is your lab overweight?
We've had a cat who was diabetic and required special insulin each day.
We also had a cat with heart disease that required daily meds. Guess we do love our pets.

We're magnets for animals with health problems. Our cat (which we found as a stray kitten in a parking garage at work) was born without an abdominal wall and needed major surgery to create one from leg muscle. She's 16 now, though, and has lived a long and healthy life aside from one other injury where her hip was dislocated a couple of days before our first daughter was born (that was fun!). Our other cat (died 10 years ago -- mysteriously -- we think a neighbor may have poisoned him) was a klutz and did things like pull stereo speakers over on himself and break his leg.
Our first dog had heartworms when we brought her home from the pound. Ca-ching. Then she had a litter of TEN puppies (my payment for delaying getting her spayed as a poor graduate student), all of which died due to bacterial contamination of her milk. About one year later, she developed heart problems and died as a very young dog.
Our next three dogs were pretty resilient and lived long lives. Typical old age problems. One did get cancer, though, and spent the last year of her life blind and deaf with three legs.
Now we have two miniature dachshund puppies, both of which developed demodex mites -- apparently common in dachshunds. They've both had extensive dip treatments that have cost us several hundred dollars!! I hope they are over it!!! The next thing I need to do is have all of their teeth removed and put them on liquids. These two crazies are the most destructive little twerps ever! They are lucky they are so lovable!!!
Our previous dachshund was aggressive and not so good with children. These two are softies and love everyone so far, although they may try to show off their bark at first. And for some reason, they think they can take out Harley, the enormous monster bulldog across the street!

Maybe you can just give the dog greens+, worked for Kevin.

Well, Honey was overweight, probably because of the low thyroid hormone. She's in the best shape ever now, full of energy. She's a very lucky dog anyway, because at 1 year old, we found out she had contracted the Parvovirus. We thought for sure she was a goner. But the vet kept her for 8 days on IV meds, and she fought it off. I figured I wasn't the only one spending tons of money on my dog, but it's nice to get confirmation!
Just found out last week our 10 yr old cat has a bladder infection and a thyroid problem. I kept telling my wife something was wrong with him, but she said he was "just marking his territory". Yeah, every 8 feet.
He's at the vet's today to see if the infection is gone. After that it's a life time of thyroid pills or a $1,000 radiation treatment.
The thyroid pills are pretty cheap, actually. Once you get a prescription from your vet, you can get them online. I order Honey's from Drs. Foster and Smith. I think I paid $15 for a month supply from the vet, but online I pay about $11 for 100 pills.
Well, one of our cats had some bug that's nothing to them, but when passed to human children causes fever for 3 weeks, MULTIPLE trips to the doctor, and an overnight stay at Texas Children's Hospital.
Lucky for the cats, we don't know which one gave it to Jack because one of them is one his last strike (3 and you're OUT at the RedLefty's house).
We asked the Infectious Disease doc in the hospital what to do with the cats and he said, "As much as I hate cats, there's no problem with them staying." We both chuckled.

Thanks for the tip, Ithebert. To be honest, my wife knows all the particulars about his diagnosis & treatment options. I'm just the one who is trying to stop the hemorrhaging of money.
We have a cat named Powhatan that was diagnosed with epilepsy about 5 years ago. The seizures were really scary, as they usually happened in the middle of the night. And there's nothing like going into the pharmacy and getting a prescription filled for phenobarbitol........ for your cat. We stopped the meds (with the consent of the vet) a while back and luckily, he hasn't had a seizure in quite some time.

Michael, that has to be one of the funniest cat pics I've seen in a long time!
Had a Dalmatian with kidney stones. He had to take daily medication.
