I had heard that he had gained a lot of weight and was pretty much unrecognizable. That would be the catalyst for the whole diabetes thing I guess. I suppose his body made it out of the sixties but his mind never did.

I don't know much about his later life. It was sad how halucinogenic drugs sent him off on a path where he could no longer live a productive life. If you can't survive as a rock musician for a psychodelic band in the 60s because of too many psychodelic drugs, it says something.
I'm a big Floyd fan, and even have Barrett's solo albums. Strange. Stranger even than those first two Floyd albums.

Syd was pretty damn intense. I had always wished I had seen the incarnation of Floyd. It had to have been amazing, there was no band like them at the time.

I got to see them during their last US tour at the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI. After intermission, they played the Dark Side of the Moon beginning to end..amazing.
I've been to a number of concerts and have seen some great bands, but they are on another level completely both music - wise and visually speaking.

I would have loved to see an early Floyd concert. But, as I was in diapers...
If you like the earlier Floyd (post Barrett, though), there's a video that came out just after Meddle that's pretty cool. Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. It even has footage of recording Dark Side, with versions that didn't make the final cut (pun intended). Various obscurities, too.
Ah, you kids. I remember seeing that in a movie theater, midnight show. I have the DVD at home. It's really a great film.
But could you imagine seeing them live in a small club in the Syd Barrett days. You would have had to walk out of there completely blown away. There was no band at that time playing music anywhere close to that. And it's a testament to that music that they are still popular today.
How did you guys like Gilmour's latest offering?

I remember a Roger Waters interview where he said he had visited Barret a few times, who was living with his mother. Sad never recovered from the drugs but at least we have his great music to remember him by.

I have it, but it seems a little slow. I'll have to listen a few more times.
While I still like the newer Floyd albums, Waters certainly the better lyricist. Gilmour often sounds like he's trying to be deep. Plus, too many rhymes. Water's could care less if something rhymed. It was like his lyrics were spoken words that just happened to flow perfectly with the music. Effortless, seamingly.
I like A Momentary Lapse, but it's just the same Floyd. Final Cut was a dividing line. Dramatic style changes.
This Gilmour album is just like the latest Floyd albums. Great and beautiful music, but not always the catchiest. Similarly, I think a lot of classical music is beautiful, but it does little for me.
I've been to two Floyd concerts (both for Momentary Lapse of Reason) and two Waters concerts (Radio KAOS). Both were unbelievable.
Yeah, I agree. It has some good moments on it but not across a whole album like they used to do. "Momentary Lapse" is good but I think "Wish You Were Here" has their finest playing on it. Saw that live- incredible.
I may try to get to a Waters show. He's playing in this area on September. Supposedly one set is DSotM.

I agree on Wish You Were Here. One night, I put on some headphone so I could listen loudly. Have A Cigar came on and I was blown away. I'd heard the somg a hundred times before, but never the little things. I must have played it 10 times in a row, to hear all those little, subtle sounds.
Have you heard Waters' latest. The opera... I haven't.
Lost mentioned Radio KAOS. Jeez...I was working in Jax, FL when that came out, crawling around on subs. At the end of our workweek (Sun, when we worked 8 instead of 16 hours) I got bombed, stoned then did some shrooms. Woke up the next day not knowing who I was. Never listened to that CD again (we were listening to it when I got polluted).
If you like Dark Side, check out Dub Side of the Moon.
Syd always reminds me of a good friend I grew up playing music with. He could play any Rush tune on the drums, play Jaco Pastorius tunes on bass, and also play a fair amount of Bach's Goldberg Variations on piano - until he was permanently scarred by some serious drug binges. He had a hard time carrying on a normal conversation after that and hasn't played much music since. Very sad.
