Rufus R. "Freight train" Jones wouldn't be impressed. (If you are over 35 and watched wrestling as a kid you'll know who I'm talking about).

Clip is from yesterday. I must say though that it's been reported that the Italian called him a "dirty terrorist". Zidane's parents are both from Algeria. Personally I would've done the same. There was also an article I read that said the Italians were f*cking with him the whole game.

It's really not all that bad. He just head butted his chest. It's not like he smashed his face in or anything.

His team mates have spilled the beans. His mum was taken into hospital that morning and the Italian guy kept giving it "I fucked your mum, she's just another Algerian whore...". It had been going on for over 90min without the referee doing anything. The price of no common language between an Argentinian referee and players?

So he blew...not excusable but understandable all the same. Suprised he stopped where he did. But he may just have lost the World Cup for France and that foul mouthed Italian might just have won it for his country.

Who's more admirable/less despicable in that?

It would have been more admirable had he just absorbed it, scored his goal and sent the idiot home empty handed...

Some one was telling me that the Italian was a reputed "dirty" player. Don't know if it's true or not but in any case it looks like it hurt.

He should have just kept quiet, and scored the winning goal(s). Its a pity, he was a master at football.

Wow, I had not heard this story, but had actually guessed that the guy must have insulted his mother or kids to set him off like that. What ZZ did was wrong, as I pointed out to my sons, but if you are going to retaliate, do it solidly like that, no talking, no emotion, just a solid pop.

Yeah, I know he is a professional, disappointed his team and his country, and I do think what he did was terribly wrong, but if the ref doesn't intervene for 110 mins of insults hurled at an ailing mother, the Italian guy is lucky he just got off with a headbutt.

What a tragic ending to a great career. The sad part of it is that it was PROBABLY a calculated rebuttal (pun intended). If you watch the replay, you will see he turns pauses (probably checking which way the ref is lokking) and thenNails the guy with a head butt to the chest- intended to hurt BUT NOT injure, hardly the action of a man who "lost" control. It looked like a calculated retaliation that was a miscalculation as it turn out.

Default The Stories Continue

The reasons get muddier while the Italian player denies insulting his mother or sister.

I'm mildly curious to know what set him off, but unless he speaks, we may never know definitively.

The Italian deserved what he got and probably should have got worse if the reports are true.

I don't consider it a tragic ending to his career. Football (soccer) is a game. The Italian defender apparently took it to another level, a very personal one.

I would have floored the guy if I was in Zidane's shoes, no question.

Zizou is said to be coming forward in the next couple days with the story. This should be interesting.

i still have alot of respect for zidane. being a player there is usualy some one talking shit the entire game, and it can really get to you especially in a high pressure game like that, and some times you get caught in the heat of the moment and react. i know that if some one was making personal attacks against me i would have done more.

Yep, seems like my cross-site linkage has not gone unnoticed. At least Ray Charles was the man, and is an acceptable pic to show instead

At the end of the day Zidane has always been a hot head a great player but a hot head none the less.

its a fine line between passion and over zealousness

Don't think it was hot headed- he was upset, but I think it was a calculated attack and he got caught. It may or may not hvae cost his team the game (and the WC) and it certainly is his last appearance in the WC (age) and it is a terrible way to exit from the WC.

i agree, its a shame that his career had to be ended like that, and yea after watching the clips again and again, he knew what he was doing

One of the articles says this:

"Hayes added however that Zidane's final act before his sending-off which ended his career in international football, stemmed from an earlier incident in the match where Materazzi tweaked his nipple."

The dreaded nipple tweak...that explains everything. Or maybe he told him that Jerry Lewis really wasn't funny

How do they know this was what was told by that italian? Moreover, how did Zidane understand what the italian was speaking. They don't speak common language or do they? I have read articles about lip reader trying to understand what Materazi(sp??) said. I haven't read anyone coming up with Materazi insulting his mom or sis.

It was a mighty hit. Something I have seen only in movies. That italian just flew back..

I would have loved to see Zidane not hitting back and instead win the worldcup.

Zidane played for Juventus for much of his club career and it's understood that he is mildly fluent in and understands Italian.
