He creates an object that makes people happy, even though it's only an illusion, because the physical world hasn't changed, only the way they perceive it. The world remains a colorless, cold, mean place.
After he creates this thing, he's proclaimed "World's Greatest Inventor," gets rich, get famous and doesn't have to do anything for himself anymore. So he's lost the fire in his belly.
