Well I am planning on popping the question at some time during the summer and now I have to look for the ring. Any tips from you guys that have done it??? Any tips from the girls would be great too!!! I know about the 4 c's and thats about all. I am positive my GF doesnt check out this site so I think I am safe asking questions on here. Any input would be great. Thanks everyone.
I actually have a really good idea for the proposal thing. Its very original. What do you mean by a cheesy proposal, give some examples. Dont be so bitter OG. Just because it didnt work for you doesnt mean it hasnt worked for millions of others. Besides, if you had a wife that was watching over ya, how would you ever post such risque pictures on friday???
How fun - I hope you share some of the details eventually. Unfortunately, what works for you one usually won't work for another. You probably know what she likes by now.
I wanted to Erika her ring already PAID FOR, so I put one on layaway, and took nearly a year to pay it off. But when she got it, I wasn't putting us in debt to buy her expensive jewelry. If you can afford it outright than even better.
Cheesy means, renting a marquee at a game, or in front of a crowd at a party where you might not get the answer you were looking for. Take her out some place special, or out on a hike up to the top of a mountain. Just make sure that the moment is magical, and she feels like the most special person on the planet.
I may share some details sometime down the road. And yes, I have a decent amount saved up. Its not a HUGE amount by any means, but its an amount that I feel good about. I know she likes white gold and round cut. Thats about it. Oh, and she doesnt like a ring that is really gaudy with diamonds all over the place. I guess the "hunt" is probably most of the fun huh??? Guys dont shop, we hunt. ha ha ha
just so long as it's original and fits the two of you. If it's been done in a movie/tv show then it's an ehh proposal and pretty cheesy. yeah, what JP said
Good advice JP. I actually have more saved up than I plan to spend, just in case I find one a little more that I like. The ring will be paid for when I leave the store.
I am a traditional kind of guy so I have to talk to her dad first, that is the scariest part. Even though I know what he will say, its still scary. She cant understand why that would scare me.
Not bitter at all, boss. Just a joke, me being a smartass. I wish you the best. It's a great feeling when you connect with someone and they connect with you. I've been lucky enough to have that happen and wouldn't trade it for anything.

I paid $269 for a 3-ring set back in 1985, and we're still wearing them. The diamond on the engagement ring has been upgraded a couple times, though.
I remember the exact amount because I really needed new golf clubs at the time, and K-Mart had a decent set for that exact same price. I suppose the clubs wouldn't have lasted as long as the old lady anyway, so I guess I made the right call.
Point is, I don't think how much you paid for the ring really matters all that much in the long run.

All jewelers negotiate, you just have to be ready to walk-away. Price tags are really just a starting figure. Also if you plan to use any kind of payment plan pay very close attention to the fine print. They can be trickier than most places.
Good luck.

Congrats.
Get the ring at a reputable jeweler. The price may be a lure, but department stores and chain stores sell poor quality.
Four things that will be discussed are color, clarity, cut, carat.
Don't always go for size (carat). A smaller stone with better color and clarity will look better. A "brilliant" cut, is one of the most popular because it reflects the light best. Final word, 6 prongs and sturdy with a solid shank. Don't go cheap on the setting. A well made 6 prong setting will make sure the stone is seated and can withstand the occasional bump.
Just a few thoughts.

Good advice, I will take that into account. There is a store here called Riddles and there are about 40 stores in the U.S. Is that the kind of chain store you are talking about???

This is very true.
When I proposed, I bought a "basic" type engagement ring and then went shopping with her later to pick out her wedding ring. She loved the whole deal, especially picking out the ring she will be wearing for the rest of her life!!!
Some women prefer the set deal where one slips over the other - so it's a good idea to get clear about this ahead of time, as well as other things like - yellow gold, white gold, platinum etc., ring size (so she doesn't have to give it up to be sized right after she gets it).
If the propsal is a total surprise, you may have to get creative to get some of these answers. But it's worth it - again it's something she will be wearing.
Don't buy it. After watching it, you will die in 10 days!! Even though Naomi Watts is hot, she's not worth dying over!!!
:p
(Congrats!)
After reading that first line I was like, "what the......???" But then I looked at my thread title and I actually got a little laugh out of it. Good one Kaiser.
My advice: take one of her girlfriends shopping for the ring. She knows what she likes/doesn't like but make sure it's a close friend that will keep the secret until you pop the question.
She's going to be wearing this ring every day for the rest of her life (hopefully) so make sure its something she likes. The one my wife picked out was very different than the one I would have picked out.
Oh, congrats by the way...marriage is cool.

By chain stores, I have in mind places like Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Sears, Penny's, etc. There are many reputable jewelry chains. Just make sure you are being served by someone who knows what they are talking about. If possible, ask for certs. Many jewelers will be certified by the Gemological Institute of America (I think that's correct).
The reason I babble on about this stuff is that my wife worked for many years with a highly respected jeweler. You should see the crap that people brought in that they bought on cruises, on shopping channels and in department stores and chains. All very flashy and extremely poor quality.
A good jeweler will counsel you and not just try to sell you the highest price rock in the store, because they will want your return business.
