Question Greece, ever been?

I am going to Greece at the end of July for a conference held in Thessaloniki (Salonica). I know the coast in that city is pretty polluted (or so I have read) and would like the chance to see the beautiful blue clear water I have always seen in pictures associated with Greece. I am interested in places to stay and beaches, both on the mainland and the islands. So, if you have been to Greece, what do you recoommend?

I've been to greece three times as well: crete, rhodos and somewhere else on the mainland. I actually never saw polluted water in Greece, it probably isn't that hard to find a nice beach. Just don't go near big cities(like Athens, the traffic is terrible over there ), i'm guessing beaches are more polluted there.

Default pollution in water...

The item I read stated that there is pollution in the harbor and area around the city from sewage seeping into the water and waste run off. I hope I have been misinformed!!!
Thanks everyone for suggestions!

Thumbs up

I've been there.

Don't remember much .

Let's see there was Corfu, Meg, Athens, the Acropolis, a plane ride, a boat ride, a slow train, a few islands (can't remember the names... maybe Naxos?), pork, Janice, lamb, no beef - great feta cheese. Ended with deck passage from Patras to Brindisi - I remember waking up really cold on a box in the car port - must have been a ferry.

Guess I'll have to go back and take pictures to review later.
