Default I Have an Interview!

Greetings all:

I would like to announce that I have an interview at a gym in NYC for a position as personal trainer. I have a friend that works at one of them (there are 4) he said that I have a good shot at getting a job here. The best part is that they help you get certified (ACSM) with lots of prep work. I called the hiring manager today and I am going in to meet him next Monday at 6PM. The gym is called Definitions.

If any of you who are either in the fitness field or just anyone in general would offer suggestions on my interview it would be much appreciated.

Wow, that place seems pricey to me. Probably a New York thing. Congrats and good luck on the interview.

Looks like a great place Keith. May I say that I am jealous that you get to work in an environment like that in the city that never sleeps! How cool is that?

JP:

Would you mind taking a peek at my resume (if you've got the time - I know you're catching up on sleep since the forum is up now)? If you can great, if not it's cool too!

- By the way I'm thinking of going in business casual (slacks, dress shirt, no tie). Thoughts?

- Also any type of questions I should look out for?

Looks awesome Keith. Don't have much advice to offer except to go in with a positive attitude. I've always gotten the jobs I've applied for and most of it was from belief in myself and my abilities, and being confident.

Good luck!

Send me an email... I will be glad to take a look at it.

Business casual for a personal trainer interview is good. Just make sure that it is nice biz casual. Something really simple and basic, like black slacks that are tailored. Not khakis!

Conservative black dress shoes with a matching belt, and a dress shirt with no tie, but a t-shirt underneath.

This shoe is a definite yes!

THIS one is really slick, but I couldn't get the image to show up.

THIS is NOT a good dress shoe.

Little things count in a big way. Make sure you clothes aren't rumpled, make sure you don't have stains or threadbare anything. Make sure that your pants aren't too big and bunched up by your belt. Make sure your shoes are polished, face shaved, non-offensive cologne. Make sure that you're well-rested and fresh-faced with a little color.

These all sound nit-picky, but if you want to make a solid impression, the devil is in the details. Plus you will feel more confident so you will be "in the zone" and you'll blow their doors off! Keep in mind that they are looking for someone who knows how to cater to their clientele, so you better come looking like their clientele.

Send that resume.

K, I never met you in person so...make sure you make eye contact, smile, give a firm hand shake and if you get nervous, don't panic. If you feel they are noticing you nervous, make a little joke like "I'm not nervous, just excited to be here!"

Be friendly and keep a professional appearance, treat them like you would treat a client. Good luck!!!

Good luck to ya Keith!

Go for the nice business casual but if you have questions call and ask them. I usually wear ties to interviews, the last time the person hiring me told me I looked great but hoped I had normal clothing to wear, the interview before that they guy (director of a hospital) said "I hope this is the only time you wear ties, I never wear them". Since then it's been nice khakis and button ups or jears with Vans or shorts with sandals.

Great news, Keith. I used to hire a bit of people. Dress nicely. Show sincere interest (you wouldn't be there otherwise, right?). And just be yourself.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I will be going over some things to wear and asking more advice about this. But until then keep the current advice coming!

Good luck Keith!
I have always dressed pretty casual to interviews, polos and khakis, but then again I live in a relativly crappy area and the gyms I work at aren't as nice as yours looks.

For the interview, if they start talking to you about training, answer questions honestly but don't trash on other training ideas. You never know if the guy hiring you still loves bodypart splits or unstable surface training.

Also, a gym isn't the place to be modest. You are a salesman, and being confidant is a good thing both at the interview and when you are training/selling training is a good thing. Its something I have had to work on a lot. Don't be ashamed to let them know how much you know and how well you would do at the job.

Kick ass sir.

Danny

Keith,
I hope all goes well today. You have gotten some pretty good advice. Be yourself and you should have no problem at all.

It is always better to be over dressed than under.
