which event would you compete in? I was watching the Olympics last night and was thinking about which event I would like to compete in if I could ever dream of even qualifying. I think I would love speed skating. I've never done it, and I certainly don't have strong enough legs for it, but it looks like something I could get into.
ever tried it Old guy? They make it look dead simple was hardest thing I have ever done booked in for a day to do it gave up after an hour shattered and in agony!
No, never tried it. I used to have a ski machine to work out on, and damn that was the toughest cardio workout I ever did. And that was only for a half hour.
I thought they were amazing. They were out there racing for almost 2 hours in some cases. Incredible stamina.
cross-country skiing ! love doing it! but not the sprint..
BFG and OLDGUY most beginners in xc-skiing don't realize how much technique there is.. and just go out and try.. without even having watched what it is supposed to look like.
When the technique is right.. (and we have the cardio to back it up) it is absolutely the closest I can imagine to flying! we feel so good.
I only get that a few minutes at a time.. (still working on my technique) and not as much as the real atletes must.. but it IS an absolutly heavenly feeling!
Mary, I've seen you talk about it in the past and it really does look like fun. With my lack of cardio ability I'd get out for a mile and they'd have to send the dog team out to bring me back in. But I've got a year to work on that. Maybe next winter.
Or speed skating - I've got racing rollerblades and have been in some impromptu races and had toyed around entering sanctioned races at one point.
But realistically, with my sprint speed being the only thing that was mildly exceptional, I'd probably have the best chance (read: none) at being the back dude on a bobsled. You know, the guy who runs real hard and then jumps in and ducks.
Summer: 100m or 200m sprint events or bike racing.

héhé! hate to disappoint you.. but they use ski-doos and not dog sleds but that's something I would love and will surely try someday.. dog sledding.. but in the drivers place!
It would be great if you'd start.. I'd love talking xc-skiing with someone here

What, no St. Bernards with kegs of brandy around there necks? I'm not going.
No, seriously I would like to try it. I'll have to build up my endurance before I do but next winter I will give it a try.
Winter: I have no talent. Can't skate or ski. If I could, I'd pick speed skating. However, I can't. That leaves me fighting for Kaiser's spot in the bobsled. He's faster than me, but I don't really want to get kicked down to that bottom guy on the two man luge...
Summer: Again, no talent. I loved fencing in college, so that would be great! I used to be good at archery (relatively speaking), so that one's good, too.
Bobsled. Since I have nothing close to skills in any of the other sports, I can most imagine bobsled. Moving beyond that, biathlon, speed skating and, dare I say, curling. Northern Minnesota and Norther Wisconsin are curling hotbeds. We have people at the olys right now.
Summer: well, taekwondo, but compared to those guys, I'd get kicked six times before I even moved. Archery interests me. Judo. Javelin. Triathlon (even if I can't really swim). How's that for a smattering? Boy, lots of choices. Gotta go look at the web site to see what else is there I'm forgetting.

well.. no St. Bernards but there are on many trails log cabins with fireplaces (how do you call those that don't have open fires but give off alot of heat?) and are very nice to stop by for a hot chocolate or what every you carry with you. Personnally I'd rather do 2 hours and stop at one for lunch before going on.. but some people stop at each one and take a whole day to do 2 hours of skiing.. nothing wrong with that.
Used to compete a bit in halfpipe so I understand how hard what they are doing is. Used to have full-contact races with buds so the snowboard cross is old hat
