I must admit that I find the "Who's Online" function a bit Orwelian in its detail. I do like the idea of people know I am online but I am not that keen about the detail. I am debating whether to go to invisible mode or not. I am interested in what others think about this.
I wonder if there could be a less intrusive option similar to the previous forum.
As an administrator to a site its a great feature. As a user its good too, especially if you communicate with members by PM. I find it falls into the harmless category, but if you disagree just disable it for you. Admins can still see you (normally they can with UBB) but nooone else can.
The 'what they're doing' is cool too. Say I've made a thread, if I check and no replies but then see on 'whos online' that someone is replying, I know to check again in a min or two and there'll be something to read on it.
I know the feature can be disabled. But that makes you compleytely invisible. I liked the semi visible of the old system. On line but what I am doing not visible
in the old system you could still see where people were...if you clicked on their name all the way at the bottom it would say "this user was last seen..."
i don't mind it. are you trying to hide what topics you're looking at? :P
if you leave the "do you want to be visible" option on "yes", but switch the "Do you want users to see the actual forum/post you are looking at?" to "no", people see you're online but it'll say "private" next to your name when your viewing posts.
Pete,
don't worry, I've dispatched my secret police and they will be arriving shortly. After a nice little vacation at my re-education camp you will really love that feature. Just remember that it is for your own protection. I have to have detail like this to keep you safe. As long as you're not doing anything questionable, then you don't have anything to worry about. I do not have a issue with herr Francoeur recording our every move. It was more a "feeling" question. The ease with which private becomes public. Since there are no real hard core prono forums on this site to get caught viewing(with the possible exception of Friday Photo's) LOL, it is not particularly threatening. But I was spying on you all (looking at "who's online) and I thought it a bit "creepy" seeing, xxx is in a PM, yyy is editing a post.
I am not bothered specifically by people seeing what I am doing but there is something about the excessive transparency...
DIAMONDPETER.. if you look at what Google (en cache) or the "Way back machine" with its archives of no longer existing pages or Microsoft with what ever, are doing.. just about as soon as we're on the net, we're public.. and for a very long time.
