Slow day at work! Figured I would throw out some thoughts on some movies I've recently seen...Just cause I can.

Hulk: Worth the rental! Great effects - a little drawn out and kind of boring in the middle. But, I think you'll find a somewhat powerful metaphor for Hulk being a lot of these small, yet fierce, nations that are becoming more of a threat to the US. Just an observation.

Paycheck: Cool concept (of course, since it's based on a Philip Dick story), and a nice opportunity to zone out for 2 hours. But, that's about it. Ben Affleck is surprisingly bearable.

In America: Ugh. chick flick. The final scene, however, I thought was beautifully done.

Shattered Glass: Loved it. A perfect example of how amazing acting can practically make a movie. I think I mentioned in a previous post that Peter Sarsgaard is one of my favorite actors (see: Boys Don't Cry, Center of the World). Hayden Christensen is great as well. Great writing and a fascinating (true) story!

21 Grams: Oh my god I am so tired of these over the top dramas (see: Mystic River). Dreary, gritty, well-acted, but depressing and, in my opinion, geared towards people who, perhaps, already lack drama in their own lives. Who needs it? That said: Del Toro was amazing! Wow.

House of Sand and Fog: OK, so perhaps this kind of sort of fits into the same category as 21 grams. But, Kingsley was just such a strong, interesting character that it made it enjoyable. An interesting look at such a different culture (he was the patriarch of an immigrant Iranian family).

Anyway, that's all. Just my $.02, of course! I'm looking forward to seeing Monster, Big Fish, and Elephant in the coming weeks. Also, Passion of The Christ is coming out in February, I think. Should be interesting!

For those of you who enjoyed Shattered Glass, or are just interested in the story, here's a link to an interview with Stephen Glass on what he thought of the movie. Interesting!

House of Sand and Fog and Mystic River were great books. Maybe they just don't translate into movies. I've heard the Cold Mountain is not a very good movie but it was a good book.

I personally thought cold mountain to be a pretty good movie. It was a bit drawn out but the fact that I had drank about 20 ounces of water real quick before I went into the theater didn't help either. I would recommend it.

Just to keep the conversation going, adding to Vin's opinions on those movies:

Paycheck:Cool concept yes, bad execution!Maybe Uma and Aaron Eckhart needed to pay rent or something, Ben Affleck should just quit.

In America: Sorry to disagree, this one has got to be one of the best movies of the year.
Brilliant acting, moving story, well paced, definetely adding to the colection once it comes out on DVD.

Shattered Glass: Movies like this should get more press and attention, not only is the story fascinating to watch, but the ensemble of the actors is just fantastic, what an inspired choice of casting - another one of the best films of 2003.
Thanks for the link to the interview!.

21 Grams: "Amores Perros" for the English speaking public.
Naomi Watts should get the Oscar for this.

Glad to see a fellow NY'er on these board.
