So the final week of debate has arrived. To move in with my long-time best friend in Queens, or to stay here in Boston. (I am changing apartments either way.)
Here's the main difficulty: When the search began for an apartment in NY, I was aiming at becoming a filmmaker. Of course, NY is a much better place to begin such a career, and my best friend already knows the place inside out... and I'd have someone to hang out with. Perfect.
AND THEN...
I realized that I actually want to become a trainer. Perhaps another full-time job will be needed until I establish more of a clientele (in a few years), but it won't be film/video related. My passion for movies has all but disappeared. SOOOO, if I eliminate film/video from the equation, then NY loses some of its value.
NY would be about 20% more expensive. I already have jobs here. I don't in NY. I have a a nice handful of good friends here. I have two great friends there. I like Boston. I like NY. I know Boston better. The owner/head trainer at my gym has told me that he'd let me start training people even before I officially have the certification, because we've gotten to know each other over the last 2 years and he knows I'm knowledgable.
My friends down in NY have been looking forward to me coming, although my potential roomate has NOT given up his current apartment yet, and he won't lose any money if I back out. I still feel bad letting him down.
I think that staying here would help me save money, relieve stress (instead of trying to re-establish myself somewhere with no job and very little $$$) and I have an opening for training.
Am I crazy, or is it pretty clear that I should stay here in Boston for now?
Thanks guys. I just need a little feedback from somebody!

Funny how that sounds like the issue I deal with almost weekly. I'm setup and established in Charlotte with a lot of contacts, job opportunities, a lower cost of living, and low stress. But then, NYC is NYC. Tough choice, though I might have an easier time staying in Boston than in Charlotte. Perhaps stay in Boston a bit longer and keep pinging away at opportunities in NYC. You may feel you're in a holding pattern at times, but you'll be saving money and keeping your stress level lower. If at some point you have enough money saved to pick up and move to NYC for a few months without a job, then I'd seriously consider it (I could've done that if not for the bike, but then, it's all about the bike right now)

Charlotte is a great market. I wouldn't leave there if I were you. NYC will always be ther and a great place to visit, but daily quality of life is too valuable to sacrifice for making it in the Big Apple.
RH, for some reason I though you were at UCLA. I would definitely stick with Boston. Maybe you can combine your passions of film and fitness. Start producing high quality fitness videos. There aren't a lot of them out there (high quality, I mean). I would definitely get certified SOON. Sounds like you have a good opportunity there. I personally really loved Boston. Certainly no lack of culture there.
RH, sorry to hear you've lost your zeal for making movies. must have been a tough year. give it some time, you may find that you miss it and want to return. stick around Boston and get a fitness certification, but keep those film industry connections fresh too.
good luck with your decision, although it sounds like you've already made up your mind to stay.

This is two entirely different questions, but I'll only go for the Boston question.
Yes, it seems like you have already made up your mind to stay in Boston. Which looks to be the right decision for you. Right now. My niece is going to school in Boston (no, you can't have her number) and loves it there. Although she has said she will be moving to NYC when she graduates.
BTW, what neighborhood in Queens do you friends live in?

I think you need to do this rationally:
Red Sox v Yankees (Boston)
Faneuil Hall v street hustlers on 57th (Boston)
Ted v Hillary (Push)
Bird v Patrick Ewing (duh!)
The Greatest comeback in sports history v the greatest choke in sports history (Boston)
Creamy clam chowder or Red Clam Chowder (New York)
USS Constitution v Statue of Liberty (New York)
Skinny Babe Ruth v Bloated drunken Babe Ruth (Boston)
Boston Strangler v Son of Sam (push)
Selling the Bambino v Buying the Babe (New York)
Filene's v Macy's (Boston)
Living in a large closet v living in a small closet (Boston)
Traffic jams v traffic jams (push)
Tom "Century's first dynasty" Brady v Joe "I wanna kiss you" Namath (Push)
The Kennedy Family v The Five Families (Depends on what you want done)

Don't they both slander, mame, murder and cover it up in order to get ahead??? And, I'm sure that the 5 families have politicians in their pockets, just like the Kennedy's have gangsters in their pockets. Wouldn't it still be a "push"?

A fair and accurate statement, but I don't want to be a one-trick pony staying in Charlotte for all of my industry--and most of my life--experience. I should put some time in at least one other market if not more. Hmmm... maybe I'll move to Little Rock
Fish, you forgot MTA versus the T

But, hey, come on out. We'll make room for ya, I suppose!

I wanna be a politician who gets to stay in office in spite of killing someone, or if the best qualification I have to run a state is the ability to say "Hasta La Vista, Baby"...I know who to call.
On the other hand, I need to launder money, or make someone disappear real-quiet-like, it's a different phone call.
They both achieve the same ends, I suppose. It's the gray area found in the means that differentiates the two...
I grew up in and around NY and while it has great things to offer the visitor and it is a great place to party is sucks to live there. The day-in/day-out stuff that makes a good quality of life is absent there.
I went to school in Boston and it is a great city. Just big enough and friendly enough... but you already know that.
If the decision were mine to make and it was based on quality of life alone (which it sounds like yours is) then Boston hands down. I think JP hit the nail on the head.

I'd like to see you stay in Boston. I still want to have a workout together.

duuuuuuude, do yourself a big favor and at least try out NYC for a bit. I grew up in Boston but now live in New York.
NYC is bigger, better, richer, and more fun. The people are better looking, the food is better, and there's 100 times more things to do here.
You will have ZERO problem getting a job as a trainer here. Equinox, Crunch, and NYSC are all hiring all of the time.
You can relieve stress and save money when you're 50, but for now get your ass over here.
Plus, with cert you could probably hook up a gig at Mejia's joint out on long island - I can't imagine a better place to learn than that. At the very least it's worth contacting him.
Also, I know a super hot chick who is a trainer at NYSC, and makes very good money and loves it. I'd be happy to give you her contact info...
Wow, what a great response I've gotten!!! Thanks to everyone. I think Bond hit on a good point. I think I am hestitating largely because I don't want to let him down. He has been my best friend for 10 years, though, and this will only be a temporary annoyance for him.
OG: Bayside is where I would have been moving.
Fish: Great points. I'll have to add those up late tonight.
Vin, while I see your points, I think I'm gonna stay here. Maybe next year!
CTA: I'm waiting... come on over!
