I always worry about my friends that ride motorcycles. Please be careful if you do.
Below are pictures and a description of a demonstration from the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair.
The Honda rider was traveling at such a "very high speed", his reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police estimate a speed of ~250 KM/h (155mph) before the bike hit the slow moving car side-on at an intersection. At that speed, they predicted that the rider's reaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him to even apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 10 feet from where the collision took place.
All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. This graphic demonstration was placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by the Swedish Police and Road Safety Department. The sign above the display also noted that the rider had only recently obtained his license.
At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is traveling at 227 feet per second. With normal reaction time to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the above operator would have traveled over 363 feet while making a decision on what actions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that no actions were taken.
Thanks, TG, for posting this. It is a good reminder for not only those that drive bikes but for all of us that drive cars as well. Put simply, speed kills. I myself tend to have a heavy foot on the gas pedal and am really trying to make an effort to slow down. When placed in a situation where you have to make a quick decision, every millisecond counts.

Best advice I ever heard: ride like you're invisible. Be paranoid, and you'll be okay for the most part. Now, 155mph might stem from the paranoia of someone/something chasing you, but I'm leaning toward stupidity for that one.

I have seen this photo on several motorcycle boards that I frequent. I still amazes me every time I see it..
Phaedrus... You ain't kidding. I got smacked in a parking lot back in June pulling into a parking space. I was right in back of the car, right in the middle of the persons rear view mirror and they backed right into me. However, 155mph on the street is definetly asking to be removed from the gene pool.

This is a really well-done TV ad out of Australia that I think very effectively shows the effect of speed on your decision-making as a driver. We've shown it around our company at safety meetings.

It's actually a South Australian ad, I believe, Chris, but I guess it got wider coverage down there. It makes you think.

caffer, I'm surprised I haven't had any close calls on the highways up here, but there will come a day, I'm sure. In the meantime, my biggest concern is staying warm on that thing

As to the pics? A perfect example that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time. How tragic that three people lost their lives over the stupidity of only one.
