Question Bored with the Repetition

Afternoon all,

I have been doing Stage 1 for a few weeks now, and I am not scheduled to wrap up until November 16th, thereabouts. I am absolutely bored with the workout at the moment. I increase my weights and watch my form, but it is hard to make myself go do the same thing over and over. I don't look forward to going to the gym because it is getting repetitive.

Is there anything else that you do to get out of the "rut" per sey? 8 weeks is a LONG TIME!

Thanks...

How often are you working out? 3x a week? What workout# are you on now - or which set/rep combination are you on?

Stage 1 took me about 5 weeks (16 workouts). But, even 8 weeks doesn't seem long to me for a workout stage. I've been doing 12-week cycles a lot this year with Power Training. But, for NROL4W, Stage 1 was the longest at 5 weeks, and then the others were shorter (like 3 weeks, I think).

I guess depending on where you are maybe you should just move on? Like if you're already on week 6 or something. I wouldn't move on if you are on week 3.

I am on A5 tomorrow.

Prior to starting NROLW I already lifted regularly, but not with any goal in mind.

I am trying to fit in 3 workouts a week, but for the last 2 weeks, I have only gotten in 2. I usually fit in an extra set if I feel like I am not working hard enough.

I have been making myself stay away from adding extra types of exercises additional to the plan for variety.

Hey Manda Jean,
I feel ya! Sometimes doing the same workout over can be a little dull. I'm in stage 3 and I've even said to myself "not this again" (damn you prone cobra!).

The only thing I can offer is, well, if you're dedicated to getting stronger and fitter then sometimes you really just need to stay consistent despite how boring it may seem. Its the same with eating healthy. I mean, boy would I love to eat a nice *insert sugary confection* with my daily afternoon coffee - but that would be a total detriment to my overall fitness goals.

To this effect, have you specified what kinds of fitness goals you are seeking? Maybe this will help you get over the drudgery of the workout and keep you motivated.

Or maybe you can snazz-up you're off day workouts (if you do these) with some more exciting exercises, giving you other things to look forward to - try a boot-camp class at the gym or take a dance lessons, join a rec team of some sport you enjoy.

But I can definitely guarantee, once you start seeing the positive changes in your body you will totally stay motivated!

Hope this helps! and stay at it!

Hi MandaJean,
I also found Stage 1 to be very long and repetitive -- and at the same time, I found it incredibly rewarding to see and feel progress each time I looked in the mirror or put on my clothes. Miss Jane is right -- the subsequent stages are, thankfully, much shorter I'm currently chipping away at Stage 5 and was having the same feeling...But when I really took a look at what was "boring" me, I realized it was that I felt I wasn't making the same progress as I did in earlier stages. To an extent this is normal, but it also told me I needed to step up my game and lift heavier to make it more challenging.

To a certain extent, weight lifting is repetitive (as is most other exercise -- to me, anyway), but try to keep your end goals in sight! If it's not too distracting, try listening to some music to pump yourself up, or checking out what other people are doing in the gym -- either for inspiration, or a laugh Or maybe you can find a workout buddy to help motivate you. Just keep plugging away at it. You're laying the foundation for a new level of overall fitness. You'll quickly become "addicted" to your new body, your new strength and your new confidence!

I think the extra set worked in there makes it seem more like a workout now. 2 sets just didn't do it for me. Now, I can really gauge where I am in the process. And with 10 reps, I am able to use heavier weight. I am just going to keep plugging onward. I refigured my days, and I will finish up about 5 days quicker than I had originally planned. Thanks for the replies.
