And I'm finally ready to buy something other than my typical running sneakers. Any tips on what to look for in a better lifting shoe? I'd like something somewhat versatile, since I still engage in some running, and step aerobics or kickboxing on my non-lifting days. Sorry for being naive, I've just never bought anything other than running shoe. Should I be looking for a cross trainer?
You want a flat shoe for lifting. Many of us lift in Nike Free's. I've got five pair now, I love them so much! Sometimes I lift in my Converse Chuck Taylor's, too.

I have been looking at the Nike Free's and notice there are several different versions of them i.e. the 3 the 5 etc. Which one do you think is best for lfiting? Does it matter?
Just to add a contrasting point of view, I HATE the Nike Free 5.0's I got. The sole is squishy, and there's no lateral support when I do moves involving twisting. And, they are not flat at all! The soles under the heel are at least 1 inch thick, and they have these deep grooves in them that make it like walking on squishy posts. I hate them.
Jane, I don't see how you call them flat. Now, Converse are flat I agree. Totally flat. I might try those. But the difference between those and the Nike Frees is so great that I can't see calling the Frees flat.
Actually they are supposed to be super flexible like being in bare feet, but they aren't all that flat. The 3.0s are the flattest ones, and even they aren't as flat as Chucks.
I won't buy more Frees because they are too squishy all over. I do wear mine for jumping rope, but once they are worn out, I'm not sure what I'll replace them with.
For lifting, you do not need cushioning, btw. All you need is enough shoe to keep the gym manager from yelling at you to tell you to wear shoes. I workout 100% in bare feet at home, and if I have to wear shoes, it's Chucks or Vibrams for the gym, park, and beach.
I like Indoor Soccer shoes - like the Adidas Samba - for lifting. They're flat like Chuck Taylors, but have a bit more support for the foot. I still use regular running shoes or cross trainers for my cardio and kettlebell workouts.
