Default Lunge options

My friend and I recently started this program together. After our first week she told me that the lunges hurt her knees too much to do. We acknowledge that the movements are supposed to help with joints in the long term, but she is just experiencing too much pain to even make them effective. Is there another movement that we can use which would be less painful on the knees until they strengthen up a bit?

I was just reading in the original New Rules of Lifting book today that step-ups are a good alternative for lunges when the knees are a problem.
