The starting position for a deadlift is the 3rd image below.

What type of Dead Lift are you referring to? If you are talking about the one in NROLFW, look at the picture in the book. It would be impossible to actually perform the exercise without bending your knees. If you are referring to the "stiff leg" version of a Dead Lift, I still wouldn't lock the knees.

Perfect, both of you. I won't lock my knees, keep 'em soft. I am doing the ones in NROL4W (just checked, I have been doing Romanian), he doesn't give instructions nor could I tell from the picture on what to do with my knees. I found if I lock them, I get more quad work, if I kept them soft more hamstring, but I have heard dire warnings against this move resulting in back injuries, thanks for the letting me know.

The deadlift isn't a quad movement, no matter which type of DL you are doing. There are a bunch of deadlift threads here with tons of good information. And, check the FAQ stickied at the top for a DL thread with a video, as well.

Also, you might want to check out the book I imaged above. You will learn so much about proper technique....it's such a wise investment.

For stage 1, you should be doing standard dead lifts, not Romanian. You will be bending your knees quite a bit, but not as much as a squat.

I think missjane meant to point to this image or one like it:

The third is the standard dead lift starting position.

See, this is why I asked. You learn so much.....Okay, Romanian is much easier for me to do- not much brain work....5am, I can't do much brain work..... I will go to Amazon.com and check out the title. Thanks.
