Having training goals would normally be a good idea, but with 3 kids, a dog, a full time job and a partner whom I occasionally look at before we pass out beside the mountain of laundry . . . . I feel pretty good about training myself to brush my teeth before bed and doggedly getting to stage 7 of the NROLFW.
I'm wondering how many women out there have gone back and worked through earlier stages. Without easy access to a good trainer, I worry about launching myself into the Book of Muscle (or something like it) which is clearly aimed at men.
Advice???

Reason: typo
Didn't you read NROL4W there is no "geared for a man" at the exercise level (even though the text of some books is aimed at young men). BoM would be a fine program, as would any of the regular NROL programs.
Congrats on finishing! Are you happy with your results?
I bought the original New Rules of Lifting book after taking about a month off (summer vacations). Its pretty much like continuing with NOR4W, but with new workouts. In the text there is a little bit aimed toward men, but I think probably 99% applies to women as well.
the only reason most books are "aimed at men" is because mostly it's men reading them. I'd get a list of some candidates (NRoL, BoM, etc) and stop in at the bookstore for a bit and look through them to see which one you'd most likely be able to fit into your schedule.
You can also preview/thumb through most of the books via Google Books so you can decide if you like the writer and get an idea of the routines.
Then either borrow it from your library or spend the money and support the writer.
I decided to redo NROL4W and then plan on starting NROL. I'm only working out 2 times a week, so the NROL4W lasted me 9 months. At the end of this second round, I will have been lifting for 18 months and will be ready for something (a little bit) new. Mostly I didn't have the energy to learn new moves yet (your life sounds exactly like mine - down to the pile of laundry my partner and I are trying hard not to end up sleeping on top of).
I am going to be doing my last stage 7 workout on Friday, so am in the same situation. With kids, part time job, life, NR4W has taken me about 8 or 9 months but I don't go to the gym much in the summer. I prefer all the fun outdoor activities.
I bought NR4M and may end up doing that. I need to look around more. I was a personal trainer in my previous life and have loved someone else making all the routines for me, one less thing to think about at this point.
After finishing the seven stages, I took I week off of weights and just did cardio. Then I started the book again. Now I am doing it a third time. This way I can better my form. Each time I review the book I find something I could improve on. I really like how it varies the sets and reps and the types of exercise at just the right stage. Currently I am doing stage 2. I feel really good. Those planks keep my jeans fitting. haha I also have 3 kids. I like getting my workout done first thing when everyone is asleep!
Wow,
Thanks to all you women for your advice!
I think I'm going to repeat the strength training section 6 and 7 again and then go on the the NROL. Its inspiring to know that so many of you got through the book and went on. Its taken me about a year to go through, but I took twice as long with the first three workouts since I was so out of shape when I started.
